Two artists. Two very different journeys.
Japson Wong came from the world of marine life. Beyond his work researching the ocean, he also creates sculptures through upcycle art, turning discarded materials into something meaningful and giving forgotten objects a new story to tell.
As for me, I found my path through farming, media and PR work, creative consultations, while continuing to express myself through doodles, comic storytelling, and art education. We came from different families, backgrounds, and creative journeys, yet somehow our paths crossed through a shared hope which is to continue contributing to Sabah’s creative scene in our own ways, one step at a time, slowly but surely.
It was never easy. He built his voice through sculptures and upcycle art, while I tried to create spaces where young artists could learn, grow, and believe in themselves. Along the way, there were moments where we both had to sacrifice, take steps back, and quietly rebuild ourselves before we could continue helping others.
That’s why this moment meant so much to me. Although it's just a simple gesture, but seeing one artist helping another artist, just like this photo, honestly made me tear up a little. Because behind every exhibition, workshop, and artwork, there are people carrying each other forward when things get heavy.
To all artists out there, never forget where you came from. Keep creating, keep sharing, and keep teaching the next generation. Because sometimes the greatest masterpiece we leave behind is not the art itself, but the artists we inspire along the way.
