Remember when getting good grades = landing a secure job = success? That idea no longer holds in today’s world.

What matters now is nurturing kids who can navigate their world with creativity, adapt to rapid changes, solve problems, and stay curious.

It’s about giving them the space to explore deeply because they want to know, to experiment and fail without being graded, and to think for themselves instead of just regurgitating answers.

A dear friend once told me she always thought I would be a tiger mum. You know… the kind that signs kids up for endless tuition and enrichment.

We recently had lunch together and she said something that surprised me.

After watching what our kids have been doing over the years: running little booths, exploring crafts, talking to people of different generations, solving problems on their own, she realised something: Soft skills are not “extra”. They are actually the things that carry our children the furthest.

She shared that she has started pulling back on some tuition and focusing more on giving her kid space to explore and grow. And it made me realise that stepping out of the rat race doesn’t always mean doing something drastic. Sometimes it looks like slowing down on a weekday evening, letting them try something on their own, or simply not filling up every pocket of their time.

Because in those small, unhurried moments, that’s often where the real growing happens.

A day to learn with our hands.
A day to reconnect with nature. 🌿

We’re excited to share Grounded Growth by The Unhurried Backyard × Gentle Farms — a day retreat where children step away from screens and immerse themselves in nature, craft, and real-life skills through hands-on experiences.

During the retreat, children will explore:
• 🌸 Eco-printing with natural plants
• 🪵 Wood carving
• 🌱 Cordage
• 🍫 DIY natural chocolate

These are skills practiced for generations, now shared in a calm backyard environment where children can learn slowly, with their hands and hearts.

Slow down. Your child is learning more than you think.

In today’s busy world, it is easy to believe that more classes, more worksheets, and more activity mean better learning. But when everything moves too quickly, children often focus on finishing instead of understanding.

Rushing can limit growth.

When we slow down, something different happens. Children begin to notice small details. They ask deeper questions. They experiment. They reflect. They make connections in their own time.

Learning becomes less about keeping up, and more about truly growing.

We teach the technique.
We let the kids try.
And when they venture off with their own ideas, we don’t pull them back. We follow them, and gently guide them forward.

Last term, during our flower arrangement session, we taught the kids a simple tall to short arrangement, and shared a few other styles too.

One child said she wants to combine two styles into one?

So we did.

We worked with her step by step, adjusting, experimenting, and making it work together.

In the end, she created an arrangement that was beautifully two-in-one:
💜 A calm purple look for her study table
🧡 And when she wanted it on the dining table, she could flip it into a warmer style with orange flowers.

Moments like this are why we love what we do. :)

Because our sessions aren’t just about “getting it right”.

They’re about learning skills, building confidence, and discovering that there’s always more than one way to create something beautiful.

At home, we do a lot of slow things.

We dye cloth.
We stitch.
We make.
We undo.
We try again.

And honestly… none of it is really about the final product.

It’s about what this way of living quietly builds in our kids.

And I’ve been seeing it translate in the most unexpected places.

Recently, Jessica found a piece of music she really liked. She wanted to learn it.

But she had no background in piano,
and it’s honestly a hard piece for someone new.

So she asked me to teach her.

Step by step, I showed her the parts she wanted.
A little at a time.
One section. One hand. One small win.

And then she did the part that mattered most:

On her own, she kept coming back for the other sections.

No applause.
No performance.
Just her… choosing to return.

That’s what this way of living quietly builds in our kids

That’s what The Unhurried Backyard is about.

Not raising kids who “finish fast”
but kids who learn how to:

✨ stay with difficulty
✨ break big things into small steps
✨ return after frustration
✨ build confidence quietly
✨ learn without being pushed

Because these aren’t just craft skills.

They’re life skills.

Can we be honest?
The reason many parents don’t do activities is not because they don’t want to.
It’s because the prep is exhausting.

The kids have big ideas.
And we’re the ones doing the sourcing.

This week I reminded myself:
🌱 Let them help gather the materials.
🌱 Their “good enough” might look different from ours and that’s perfectly fine.
🌱 Meet them where they are, and let creativity grow from there.

When kids say:
“I’m bored.”
Most adults rush to fix it.

We offer screens.
We plan activities.
We fill the silence.

But boredom is often the moment right before:
✨ creativity
✨ independence
✨ deep play

At The Unhurried Backyard, if kids feel bored, we let them be bored. We keep materials around for them to explore, and then we watch in wonder as their ideas begin to take shape.

Boredom isn’t the end. It’s the beginning.
