Hungry Ghost Festival

The "Hungry Ghost Festival," also known as the Zhongyuan Festival, is a traditional event celebrated by Chinese communities, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. This festival, observed during the seventh month of the lunar calendar, is rooted in the belief that the spirits of the deceased return to the living world during this time. In 2024, the festival runs from August 4th to September 2nd, with the main day, known as "Ghost Day," falling on August 18th.

The festival involves various rituals and offerings aimed at appeasing these wandering spirits. People burn incense, joss paper, and even elaborate paper effigies representing items like houses and money to provide for the spirits in the afterlife.
