"The thicker the better" Phytoplankton dynamics
Lag phase
Cells are innoculated into our 500ml sterilized bottles to reach about 100 cells/L for 2-3 days to prepare for acclimation, growth and cell division.
Growth phase
Cells division accelerates at an exponential rate from day 4 onwards. Our phytoplankton are harvested during this phase for feeding or chilled to prevent the culture from thickening or further division of cells.*
Stationary phase
*Cell division reaches its peak and is no longer suitable for feeding. Culture starts to decline and there are no further increase in density. High density cultures causes build-up of metabolic waste products.
Senescent phase
The density of culture declines and crash.
Phytoplankton from stationary phase onwards may still be nutritious, but as they die, cells will rupture and bacteria will proliferate, differentiating the line between feeding and poisoning your tank.
NEarth Live Phytoplankton is cultured and harvested in a fully controlled environment, free from both chemical and biological contaminants.
