When making a reinterpretation of an old work the artist has an enormous task ahead: to make the new work special in a different manner, so that each work stands on its own. Last year I made a reinterpretation of my old painting Requiem. To explore how to improve it, how to make it different and how to make it special was an incredible experience.

We are here because of our ancestors, we often don’t get to know them, but a portrait makes the distance a bit shorter. To look at the people that brought you here is something really hard to express. My wife is lucky enough to have a bit of her family history recorded through portraiture, and our wish is that our great great grandkids will be able to look at our portraits and feel proud of where they came from.

A portrait is a celebration of life, it is deciding how you are going to be remembered, it is honouring a journey. To have something to live up to. To own an object that will survive for the centuries to come so when we are gone, there is still a piece of us.

Often we look at the final piece without knowing what took place in order to make it. The sketches, the studies, the research. All these is done with the objective of communication a specific story and emotions. That is the responsibility of the artist, for their work to be understood. This work attempts to convey the harsh realisation that not even in Arcadia one can escape death. A nostalgic painting that states a simple truth: there is no life without its end, and that’s what makes it so valuable.

The problem isn’t portraiture.
The problem is confusing novelty with vision.
Anyone can paint an idea.
Very few can reveal a human being.
That’s why portraiture has survived every artistic movement for centuries.
Portraits are not the opposite of vision. They are one of its highest forms.

I still remember the day this happened and I am still grateful for it. Life has a way of showing us the right path to follow. I am incredibly blessed to be able to live from my art.
