What if color was never just color, but a technology refined over millennia? Join Arquetopia’s Natural Pigments Instructional Program, a 3-week immersive residency in Oaxaca exploring the sophisticated knowledge systems embedded in natural dyes. Through hands-on instruction and individual mentoring, participants work with cochineal, indigo, pericón, tree barks, and other locally sourced materials while learning traditional recipes for dyes, mordants, and fixatives that have been cultivated, adapted, and transmitted across generations.
This program approaches color not simply as a material, but as a form of cultural knowledge—one that connects ecology, innovation, trade, memory, and artistic practice. Participants engage critically and constructively with the histories of natural dyes, from the global significance of cochineal and indigo to the ways Indigenous and local communities developed highly specialized technologies of color long before industrial chemistry. By situating these practices within broader historical and contemporary contexts, the residency highlights the enduring relevance of ancestral knowledge in shaping creative futures.
