Working with textiles and natural dyes is not just technique.
It is a way of engaging material histories shaped by extraction and ancestral knowledge.

At Arquetopia, material practice becomes critical research:
learning through making, situating color in its historical and political contexts.

The Power of Protest is a two-week silkscreen printing program in Puebla, Mexico, focused on political posters and the visual language of resistance. Grounded in Mexico’s long histories of graphic activism, popular print traditions, and social movements, participants develop their own protest images through hands-on printing, critical discussions on art and power, and reflection on how images circulate in struggles for justice. The program connects material practice with anti-colonial perspectives, local histories, and contemporary forms of dissent, exploring how graphic art becomes a tool for visibility, solidarity, and collective resistance.

“So what do we do with that knowledge? Where do we go from there? The point is not to dwell on horror, but to avoid repeating it. These are the kinds of questions I’m constantly asked in our residency programs at Arquetopia.”

✨ Under the Opacity of the Reflection ✨

📅 Friday, September 12, 2025
🕛 12:00 pm CT
💻 Via Zoom

Suzanne Césaire imagines being free as a hidden, subterranean force—an abyss from which new ways of being can emerge. From this vision arises Sousrealism, rooted in the under-commons: a poetic and political sensibility born from marginalized depths. This resonates with Édouard Glissant’s “right to opacity”—the refusal to be simplified for dominant powers, and the affirmation of complexity, irreducibility, and autonomy. 🌊🌌

At a time of rising nationalism and division, this virtual master class invites the Arquetopia Alumni Community to nurture solidarity through art. Organized by Arquetopia’s new initiative VAACA, Francisco Guevara will explore reciprocal learning, situated practices, and engagement with non-dominant forms of knowledge. 🌱🤝

🆓 Exclusive for Arquetopia Alumni
📖 Includes 3 suggested readings
✉️ Free enrollment (mandatory) via email: [email protected]

⏳ Deadline: Monday, September 8, 2025

Let’s come together to imagine how opacity, reflection, and poetic imagination can open spaces for belonging and reimagine the role of art in uncertain times. 🌍💫
