About Dell:
She is a super creative local resident artist at
Dell loves music (a lot), laughing at/with me, and responding to “como estas?” with the ultimate reply: “CHINGON!”

She was super quiet at first and I didn’t help things because I was self-conscious about talking… I understand much of what I hear, however my Spanish speaking can be extra feo.

Then one day, Dell just like started talking to all of us international resident artists and kept repeating my name and saying “my friend” after it. “Mi’Jan, my friend.”

Giving thanks to Dell for making Mi’Jan into a whole phrase instead of a sole name, but moreso for Dell giving me Dell, mi amiga.

I read an impressive article* in the New Yorker last month, so I was super nervous to make pictures with last week.
-
But then Luvia talked to me for the longest time, keeping her camera in her lap, asking me about my creative practice and life. I told her how I formally learned to be an oral historian, after a childhood filled with watching my parents do their beautiful story work.
-
And then I was honest about the new ways Oaxaca and this residency are shaping my practice.
The creative cross-training that happens between residents.
The ways that Spanish stretches the mind daily, like a rubber band.
How Aurelia’s food nurtures bellies but the real magic is how she starts our days by nourishing our bellies and nurturing our hearts.
Specifically, though, I talked about how depleted and unwell I felt, and didn’t realize it fully until I got here.

Then I shared my favorite surprise…the heart of revealed itself to me. It’s what & & have each mastered so well. I learned how to romance my own life! (Is it cheating if it still requires the participation of incredible people)?

I don’t know why, but something about that statement - me learning how to romance my own life - made Luvia put her camera down and start to cry?

Giving thanks to Luvia, for sharing her special gift with me, ie the act of falling in love with some aspect about the people she captures, just long enough for us to carefully soften. To be known. To be seen. To feel worthy of capturing, beautifully.

Highest agradecimiento to for giving permanent, needed gifts to artists, creators & cultural workers the world over.

Giving thanks for every artist residency & every artist residency friend.

The kind of friends who I make inside the sweet residency communities, as well as those who travel near and far to visit me. For the tons of encouragement and love (cultural workers can use all the encouragement and love!!) while posted up in the space of full-time relationship building, remembering and creativity.

This one, in this photo? A special kind of Free Black Lady Artist who met up with me in my last residency at Kennedy Center and dipped into Oaxaca to love up on her own writing practice, be her version of amazing, and say hey to yours truly.

A good role model for me to learn from, and follow.

Now who’s got next??!!! Which one of my good creative friends will be doing a residency in Senegal, and would love for me to visit? Or should we do a residency together?? Btw: I have it on VERY good authority that the brothers are EXTRA fine, and Black women are treated well. (I’m not playing. Please don’t message me about how you coulda shoulda might’ve applied, but the dog ate your digital application. 😂 Don’t mess with my ).

This place. (Oaxaca)

Everything about it. (People, food, clay, rich street art, time in the kitchen, mezcal)

This residency is beyond-the-beyond. ( )

Getting to share some Speing break time with The Teenager, and having her be inspired by the heart of all of this that she’s decided to create her own craft/cultural work, so that we can officially do a mama-daughter artist residency?!

So many love languages for me here. (Even if my Spanish speaking is struggling these weeks).

10 FT TALL HOLLYHOCKS?!!!! That + organic garden breakfast + baby goats + promise of IMMEDIATE spa time = worth the 4 mile hike, and have officially turned me into one of those “nature” tree-hugging types. Also, restorative vacations have become a legitimate fixture in my life.
