¿Qué impulsa a cachorros abandonados a formar una pequeña montaña temblorosa en el bosque antes de una tormenta de nieve?

Un buen samaritano conducía por una zona rural de Oklahoma cuando algo llamó su atención. Expuestos a la intemperie y sobre la tierra helada, había ocho pequeños bultos peludos acurrucados. Eran cachorros de nueve semanas.

El cielo anunciaba la llegada de una tormenta que paralizaría la región. Al saber que no sobrevivirían a las temperaturas bajo cero, contactó sin dudarlo a la organización Puppy Haven Rescue.

Una rescatista llegó de inmediato. Los perritos se apretaban frenéticamente para mantener el calor, ignorando el bosque alrededor.

¿Por qué se apilaban así en un espacio abierto en lugar de buscar refugio bajo los árboles?

La respuesta está en sus instintos de supervivencia. En situaciones de frío extremo, los caninos recurren a la cleptotermia. Según la American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), al agruparse reducen su superficie corporal expuesta al aire helado, compartiendo calor para evitar la hipotermia letal. Es un recurso vital porque los cachorros carecen de la grasa necesaria para termorregularse solos.

La voluntaria sacó suavemente a cada cachorro de la tierra y los puso a salvo. Resultaron ser una mezcla de Gran Pirineo y Pastor Alemán. Ya en el refugio, fueron bautizados en honor a Los Juegos del Hambre: Peeta, Katniss y sus hermanos.

Hoy prosperan en hogares de acogida mientras vigilan a su madre, una perra feral. Su futuro ahora está lleno de esperanza.
