Keope

Keope Experimenting with non-linear thoughts applied to the creative process. KEOPE is an artist collective living and working between Berlin and Presniča.

The band herby relies on sole communication through music to direct their improvised live performances. KEOPE started in July 2015 when the two originators met in Trieste / Italy with the aim to record an album in an abandoned quarry on the Slovenian border. The outcome "Tropicalni" seems to exist in a vacuum. Stylistically, the nine tracks here owe something to multiple genres and reference point

s - from folk, Balearic, psychedelic and electronica, but none really fit well. Synths drift in breezily, floating around the wistful melodies - acoustic guitars sparkle, while flutes and melodicas evoke a little south American shamanism, and the beats hint at a deeper connection to dance rituals. This could account for the free floating, otherworldly, aesthetic - little seems to impact on the sense of freedom and exploration the two manage to conjure up from their reclusive base. Sounds are recognizable and evocative, but never worn as signposts to the mysterious pair’s backgrounds or influences. Something quite complex is carried out in a very beguiling and seemingly effortless way. The songs here seem to dematerialize into the ether, and reform in different shapes and moods elsewhere. Cut loose from any moorings and drifting under a blue sky - Tropicalni is both the journey and destination. KEOPE's work is based on improvisation and the interplay of acoustic and electronic instruments. Spontaneity, a reduced tool-set around the electric guitar, drum machines and an analog modular-snthesizer as well as the sole communication through music between the individuals are key. KEOPE also welcomes guest singers, instrumentalists and performers from an array of styles and cultural backgrounds. To escape the constrictions of indoor recording studios and to enhance the contact with nature and the transcendent aspect of music, KEOPE create their music outdoors with a mobile recording studio set-up. Being in an open air space without the common sonic interferences, their sound became much wider, purer and more organic.

Shortly before our gig at Mexico City’s wonderful Radio Nopal there was this streetfood vendor with his steam-machine on wheels. The most bizarre vehicle with a super loud horn that makes sure everybody around is informed that Camote is ready to eat.

We recorded that steam-pipe sound and used it as a sample ever since. You can actually hear it at the very end of our song ‚Tier Maschine‘ from the FLIKKA FLOKKA album (2023 Bigamo Musik).

After the gig at the radio station we hung with old and new friends and fell in love with the clandestine and creatively overflowing city.

Invited to play in Marrakesh, we ended up staying a bit longer than just for the gig. We booked a room in a Riad in the old Medina and spent the days before the concert rehearsing and roaming the streets, courtyards and rooftops with our wonderful host Zak - soaking in local life and buying all sorts of handmade instruments.

The night before our performance, we went to hear the master musicians of Joujouka play a four-hour, non-stop set on the outskirts of the city: primordial, hypnotic, timeless.

When night fell on the beautiful adobe buildings of the venue, and after our gear was fully and inevitably coated in desert sand, we had great fun playing our set. We were especially proud to receive feedback from the locals, who heard a sense of familiarity with their ancient music in our rhythms and patterns.

For the “Nocturno” video we teamed with the amazing Multipraktik crew from Ljubljana and got back to where it all began: the abandoned quarry.

We set up our studio again and played a few tracks while the guys were shooting from in between the bushes until the night fell and the magic began!

A lot of friends participated in the making of this piece, here is our thank you to all of them: all the Multipraktik crew Matic Zavodnik, Miha Brodaric, Nina Vrhovec and Rok Berglez, as well as our friends Ale, Alex, Franz, Marta, Andrea, Elisa.

There was one scene we were convinced would become the core of the video: a huge burning triangle in the middle of the night. It was intense, magical, almost ritualistic.

But in the final edit — it didn’t make the cut.
Sometimes the strongest moments remain behind the scenes, shaping the story in ways that don’t always reach the screen.

It all properly started in summer 2015. Marcus travelled to Trieste to meet Toni, with the idea to make music together again - for the first time since that one recording in Santiago de Chile a decade before.

Escaping the city heat, we packed our gear and drove into the Karst highlands. By chance, we found a hidden sanctuary, set up our mobile studio, and spent a week making music beneath an endless clear sky.

It was July 2015, and here is where it all began: the old abandoned quarry in Col on the border between Italy and Slovenia.

Every summer since, Toni and Marcus vanish into the Karst woods - it has become a ritual of reflection and invention.

We call it the KEOPE Retreat: a playground for imagination, a place for us to broaden our horizons, pushing ourselves constantly out of our comfort zone.

A practice without end - to listen, and try to better understand one another.

We’ve got something to celebrate:

10 years of chasing sounds beneath an endless clear sky, enjoying non linear thinking, circular patterns and wild improvisation.

But the story actually began 20 years ago — in Santiago de Chile:

Marcus was touring Latin America with Matias Aguayo, after producing his debut album “Are You Really Lost” (Kompakt Records, 2005), as well as remixing and releasing 12”s under their “Broke” moniker. One stop was Santiago de Chile, where Marcus and Toni Bruna briefly shared an apartment and recorded their first piece of music together.

Toni was based in Santiago collaborating with inventor Roberto Larraguibel at ArtOficio (https://www.larraguibel-gaviola.com), the dream lab where art and circuitry blurred into one. A multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Toni was roaming the city with a tape recorder chasing the vibrant sounds of the streets: market vendors, bus performers, nighthawks, folk collectives and experimental sound hackers.

10 years later, in 2015, Marcus and Toni crossed paths again and KEOPE was born. A music project rooted in non-linear thinking applied to the creative process. A sonic system wired around non verbal dialogue and wild improvisation.

Three albums, millions of streams, and countless gigs later, it’s 2025 — a good moment to reflect, dive into the archives, and share some of the golden moments we’ve experienced.

Over the next weeks, we’ll be sharing unreleased & behind-the-scenes photos, videos and special gems from our journey.

Out Now: our new piece ‘Tesito En El Bosque’ for the EMMI AID compilation by the initiative 🌴🎸🦗

57 musicians and bands have contributed original or previously unreleased songs to support the Emmauswald, which is threatened by deforestation — a musical wake-up call to save Berlin-Neukölln’s largest woodland.

We were instantly drawn to the project, having made music in the open air since the summer of 2015. When the city grew too hot and restless, we packed up our gear and went to an abandoned quarry. Hidden deep in the woods on the border with Slovenija, we built a makeshift studio and camped for a week, crafting music beneath a clear sky full of stars. It was a spellbinding experience we try to relive whenever we can.
