This annual charity event held at San Miguel, Baja every year is one of the largest surf event in Ensenada and one of the few bi-national events in the Californias. This surfing event symbolizes that the ocean has no borders and surfing can bridge the divide between countries and cultures. More importantly, the event celebrates the life of one of Ensenada's most beloved surfers, Walter Caloca, who
tragically passed away several years ago, but not before he spread his love throughout the region's surfing community and beyond. With youth competitors from the United States and México, spectators, music, prizes and other entertainment, this year’s event is expected to be a tremendous success. Proceeds from the event will support UAPO’s efforts to promote a bi-national surfing experience among youths on both sides of the US/Mexico border. Baja Bound Surf Series
The binational surf series has been established for the 2016/17 season. The series will combine three surf contests in Baja and one in San Diego: The Walter Caloca Surf Open at San Miguel, The Rosarito Open at Rosarito Beach, The Dempsey Holder at Inmperial Beach, CA., and The Baja Surf Club Invitational at San Miguel. The series are organized by UAPO (United Athletes of the Pacific Ocean), WiLDCOAST and Baja Bound Insurance, with the goal of promoting youth surfing, cultural exchange and environmental issues shared by the US and Mexico. "Surfing in Mexico started in the sixties because of surfers traveling the coast searching for waves" says UAPO President Alfredo Ramirez. "It didn't matter if they were in Alta California or Baja California - friendships were created, surf clubs were born, and it produced a community beyond borders. This new surf series is a testament to the idea of one ocean, one passion." Baja Bound Insurance will be putting up a prize purse of $3,000 that will be awarded to the top three open men's and open women's points leaders at the third and final contest. The surf series will kick off with the Walter Caloca Surf open on April 9th-10th at San Miguel, the iconic pointbreak in Ensenada. Registration is available online at www.uaposurf.com
