In the 2017-2018 basketball season (my senior year of high school) every basketball game during the national anthem I took a knee. Although I had the support of my teammates and coach staff I was the only one that was on the ground taking a knee (with the exception of my family that knelt in the stands with me). Being a minority at Jesuit High School, I had a very different experience than the majority of people I went to school with so not many people understood why I did it so here’s why. I was taking a knee my my little black brother who at the time was only 2 years old and had no idea what was going on in the world and who one day might experience an unjust situation and not understand why. I did it for all my black cousins and young black men that I’ve known my whole life that have been pulled over and stereotyped because of the color of their skin. I did it for my black uncles that have had numerous encounters with the police who said they “fit the description” of someone who did a crime. I did it for the times that I am followed in a store when I’m “taking to long” to buy something. I did it for the times when I’m walking in my neighborhood with my brother and my niece and I can see people looking out their windows and I hear them make sure their car is locked. I did it for the people that felt like they couldn’t speak up due to fear or felt like their platform wasn’t big enough. I was privileged enough to go to Jesuit and be a minority and share my experiences with people who may not have encountered someone like me. I was a big fish in a small pond and used my platform to share my ideas and experiences. I love being black and I love my black people and I always will!

I am so proud of my mom who is on the front lines. Even as a single mother of 6 who has survived cancer, she is taking a risk everyday to save lives during this pandemic.
