World Mental Health Day 2024 has been happily commemorated today in Mzuzu. The theme for this year is 'It's Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace'
St. John of God and Hospitaller led the commemoration where several stakeholders participated. Malawi Police Service, MDF, government departments especially hospitals, mission hospitals (St. Johns), NGO's, Mzuzu residents and among others attended the function. Commissioner of Police (N), Mr. Richard Luhanga, was the Guest of Honor who strongly declared his support to advocate for this important issue so that working places are conducive to all employees both in formal and informal sectors.
St. John of God advised that raising mental health issues impact not only employees but also the success of the whole institution. 'When employees are struggling with poor mental health, it can lead to reduced productivity and poor performance. However, when employees are psychologically healthy they tend to be more motivated, engaged, and productive in their work. They are also more likely to be creative, and innovative, and contribute positively to the institution’s performance' St. JoG highlighted.
The Guest of Honor solemnly appealed to employers start thinking of investing more in their employee's mental health and well-being as one component of creating a conducive environment for workers.
Mental Health issues in workplaces must be treated with seriousness.
The commemoration took place at Mataifa ground in Mzuzu and was spiced up with several activities such as Umoza Cultural Troupe, Mweluso Drama Group and many more.
