LEGENDS NEVER DIE: Remembering Kennedy “Spyral” Mwenya

Malawi and the world lost a rising star too soon when hip‑hop artist, graphic designer, and proud scholar Kennedy “Spyral” Mwenya passed away in June 2024. Born on June 13, 1995, in Rumphi’s Chikulamayembe village, Spyral’s incredible journey took him from the north to the heart of the music scene in Blantyre.

A CREATIVE POWERHOUSE.

He began making waves in the industry in 2016, quickly earning acclaim as part of the Proud duo.

A graduate in Computer Science, Spyral was also an award‑winning graphic designer at FD Communications and creator of album art and brand visuals across the entertainment scene.

He bagged the Creative Artist of the Year at the Institute of Marketers Malawi (IMM) Awards for his excellence in design.

MUSICAL JOURNEY.

From his debut tracks like Walahi (2015) and Levels, to RIFA, Swift, and Who, each release showcased his lyrical skill and evolving sound. Among his standout projects:
The 2021 LP "High Hopes" with its anthem “Ndimaganiza Bho”
A string of singles exploring hip‑hop, afrobeat, and amapiano, including Wine It (2022) and Kuche Kuche 2 (2023)

TRAGIC LOSS AND OUTPOURING OF LOVE.

It was while returning from a family funeral in Rumphi that Spyral was involved in a fatal car crash near Mzuzu. Confirmed by close friend Tsar Leo, former collaborators, and Musicians’ Union of Malawi leaders, his death on June 25 was a staggering blow.
