The story happened in Nutty Putty Cave in Utah on November 24, 2009, and is one of the most heartbreaking cave rescue attempts ever recorded.
John Edward Jones, a 26-year-old medical student and experienced caver, mistakenly entered a narrow, unmapped passage he believed led to a larger chamber.
As he squeezed through, the tunnel became so tight that he slipped headfirst into a vertical crevice and became trapped upside down.
Being inverted for so long placed enormous strain on his body.
Blood pooled in his upper body, making it increasingly difficult for his heart and lungs to function.
Despite rescuers working continuously for nearly 28 hours and briefly managing to move him, an anchor used in the rescue suddenly failed, dropping him back into the same position.
John died from cardiac arrest while still trapped. Recovering his body was considered too dangerous, as it would have put more rescuers at risk.
The cave entrance was permanently sealed with his body still inside, and the site was turned into a memorial.
