On this International Day of the Girl Child, we call on families, communities, institutions, and all stakeholders to work together to create an environment where every girl is protected, valued, and empowered to thrive. Let us renew our commitment to putting girls first—not only by protecting them from harmful practices, but also by ensuring they have the opportunities and support to reach their full potential.
As Maldivians, we can take pride in the significant progress made to protect girls’ rights, through stronger legal protections under the Child Rights Protection Act (Act No. 19/2019).
This Administration remains committed to building a caring community for every child. Key pledges include increasing the single-parent allowance, implementing the A Family for Every Child programme, establishing a comprehensive social protection mechanism across all islands, and enhancing services in shelters for children in need. These measures aim to support families, protect children in vulnerable situations, and ensure timely access to essential services for those affected by violence.
The National Action Plan on Prevention and Response to Violence against Children 2024–2028, endorsed by the Government on 3 September 2024, sets out a comprehensive approach to preventing and responding to violence against girls and all children.
Aligned with this plan, the National Development Plan integrates child protection across its cross-cutting areas. This alignment supports a coordinated, sustained effort to prevent and respond to violence against children and to foster a caring community for all.
Creating a safe environment for girls is a shared responsibility. Families, communities, schools, institutions, and every part of society have a role to play.
Let us work together to build a country where every child feels safe, loved, and cared for.
