【NoGravity Theatre from Italy Creates a Magical Stage: “Divine Comedy” Defies Gravity!】

With “Divine Comedy”, Italian company NoGravity Theatre transcends the boundaries of staging, revealing dancers in their full physical and expressive power. Drawing inspiration from Dante’s epic poem, the enchantment emerges from a continuous dialogue between what unfolds on stage and its reflection in the scenic mirror, creating a dual visual dimension that profoundly transforms perception.

Beyond mere illusions, the audience is immersed in a complex three-dimensional space, where choreography evolves in perfect balance between the physical body and its virtual image.

NoGravity’s technique achieves striking expressiveness and visual precision comparable to a moving photograph. Every gesture, figure, and suspension are calibrated with meticulous accuracy, giving life to images suspended between time and space – an ethereal scenic universe where body art merges with the magic of imagination.

【“Divine Comedy”: Dante’s Classic Reimagined Through Gravity-Defying Dance】

As the lights come up, dancers appear suspended in mid-air — turning, gliding, and moving as if gravity no longer applies. At this year’s Macao Arts Festival, NoGravity Theatre from Italy brings a striking new interpretation of Dante’s “Divine Comedy”, turning Dante’s epic journey into a stage experience built around floating bodies and aerial movement.

Inspired by Dante’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise, the production uses aerial choreography, shifting formations, and carefully crafted lighting to create scenes that feel both surreal and cinematic.

Creating the Illusion of Weightlessness
NoGravity Theatre is best known for its signature performance style, which gives dancers the appearance of floating effortlessly through space. Unlike film effects or stage illusions, the company achieves these movements through a combination of specialised stage engineering and years of physical training. Performers glide horizontally, rotate slowly in the air, and move in ways that seem to ignore gravity altogether, creating the illusion that the dancers are drifting through air.

The production’s visual design plays an equally important role. Reflections, mirrored formations, and shifting light effects continuously reshape the stage space, making it difficult to tell where choreography ends and illusion begins. The result feels at once inspired by Renaissance art and rooted in contemporary experimental theatre.

The production is created by Emiliano Pellisari and Mariana Porceddu, who lead the project across choreography, stage design, and music direction. Over the years, the pair have developed NoGravity’s distinctive theatrical language, developing a movement style that makes dancers appear untethered from gravity.

A New Stage Interpretation of Dante’s “Divine Comedy”
First written in the 14th century, Dante’s “Divine Comedy” remains one of the defining works of Italian literature, following a symbolic journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. In NoGravity Theatre’s interpretation, each chapter takes on its own visual and physical style. The “Inferno” sequences are filled with sharp, intense movement that reflects conflict and suffering. “Purgatorio” becomes quieter and more restrained, while “Paradiso” opens into lighter, more fluid choreography, with dancers appearing to drift freely through the air.

Running for around one hour, “Divine Comedy” offers audiences a performance that combines dance, stagecraft, and illusion in ways rarely seen on a theatre stage.

【Macao Arts Festival Ignites Community Vitality: ‘Where culture flourishes, happiness happens’ — Performing Arts Gala Brings a Weekend of Culture and Fun to Iao Hon】

The Macao Arts Festival continues to bring art into the community with “Where Culture Flourishes, Happiness Happens” — Performing Arts Gala, taking place from 22 to 24 May at Iao Hon Market Park. Starting at 6:30pm each evening, the free outdoor programme will feature performances by visiting groups from Yunnan and Fujian alongside local arts organisations, offering three lively nights of music, dance, and theatre for audiences of all ages.

Visiting Artists Bring the Traditions of the Silk Road to Macao
The Ximeng County Ethnic Cultural Work Team from Yunnan will present Echoes of Sigangli — Indigenous Song and Dance Show of Wa Ethnic Group, featuring the famous Wa “Hair-Swinging Dance”, a traditional performance originating from the Southwest Silk Road region. Using their long hair as part of the choreography, dancers move powerfully to the rhythm of wooden drums, a performance often referred to as the “Flamenco of the East”.

The troupe will also perform works including Body Percussion and The Wa People Sing New Songs, giving audiences a closer look at the richness of Wa culture. Those interested in experiencing the dance firsthand can also join a free Wa dance workshop on 24 May at 10am at Iao Hon Market Park, where performers will teach basic dance movements in an interactive community session.

Also joining the programme is Quanzhou One-Six Art Troupe from Fujian — historically known as the starting point of the Maritime Silk Road. Their light comedy Quanzhou’s Variety Arts follows the humorous adventures of Pigsy (Zhu Bajie) as he unexpectedly stumbles into a traditional Minnan wedding, while Ming Dynasty philosopher Li Zhi makes a time-travelling appearance on stage. Blending string puppetry, nanyin music, and Gaojia opera, the production brings together several forms of Chinese intangible cultural heritage in a lively showcase of southern Fujian culture.

Local Arts Groups Bring Creativity and Surprises to the Stage
Big Mouse Kids Drama Group will present the musical theatre production Take the Leap, previously shortlisted for the finals of the first Hong Kong MusicalCon. Told through a fantasy-inspired story, the production follows a timid protagonist chosen to enter a magic competition, where they confront anxiety and reconnect with their younger self. Featuring original songs performed by young actors, the musical explores themes of fear, growth, and self-acceptance.

Association of Chinese National Culture and Arts will stage the dance theatre production Mother’s Silk Ribbon, which tells the story of a wooden keel from a traditional Red-Head Boat drifting from the forests of Chaoshan to the shores of Macao, where it is eventually transformed into a market beam by local craftsmen. Combining Chaoshan Yingge dance traditions with cultural elements inspired by Hui’an women from Fujian, the work reflects journeys of migration, resilience, and rebuilding a home.

Own Theatre will present the physical theatre production Peter Pun’s Neverland, following its protagonist as he journeys to a fantasy island in search of lost courage and identity. Collaborating with emerging local stunt performers, the production combines theatre with physical performance and acrobatics, taking audiences on an imaginative adventure about rediscovery and belief.

Casa de Portugal em Macau will present On the Route of Portuguese Music, a performance centred around traditional Portuguese folk music and songs inspired by the sea. Featuring nautical-themed stage design, LED projections, and dancers dressed in traditional costumes, the production invites audiences into the atmosphere of Portugal’s maritime heritage through music and dance.

Art does not only belong on theatre stages — it can also be found in everyday community life. This weekend at Iao Hon, audiences can not only enjoy free evening performances, but also take part in community workshops including Wa dance and family storytelling, creating a relaxed and joyful cultural experience to share with friends and family.

【Rave reviews in Wuzhen! The story of Wu Zetian that rejects the "myth of romance" — Additional performance of the programme “Her Dynasty”】

“Her Dynasty” unfolds over four snowy nights at pivotal moments in the life of Wu Zetian, born Wu Zhao, tracing her ambitious ascent to power, her confusion and inner turmoil, and her unyielding spirit.

Produced and presented by The Nine Theatre, “Her Dynasty” premiered in the ‘Dream Granary’ section of the 2025 Wuzhen Theatre Festival, where it sparked widespread discussion and attention. The play’s ingenious circular structure leads the audience step by step along Wu Zetian’s journey to become the first and only ruling Chinese Empress. Through her very existence, she drives cracks into entrenched traditions, ultimately breaking through and transcending them.

Her birth name, Wu Zhao, means ‘the red sun shining high in the sky’. However fiercely the snow sought to veil her destiny, it could not stop her from burning brightly, melting the frozen ground of a millennia-old patriarchy, paving the way for the countless women who would follow.

Tickets for the additional performance of the play “Her Dynasty” are on sale through the Enjoy Macao Ticketing outlets, telephone and online booking from 10am on 23 May.

【“Now What?”
Macanese Patuá Theatre’s Latest Production Questions the Changing City and the True Meaning of Belonging】

Returning to the Macao Arts Festival once again this year, the Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group presents its latest original production, “Now What?”. The deceptively simple title opens the door to a dilemma we all eventually face: do we hold tightly our local roots, or leave familiar places behind in search of something new?

The story begins with a farewell. After the death of their father, old Secundino, two sisters—Marta and Elena—return to Macao to take over the traditional neighborhood eatery left behind by their family. But time has changed the city they once knew. The familiar streets of the past have transformed beyond recognition, while the old eatery seems frozen in another era — business is slow, life moves quietly, and the future feels uncertain.

Caught between family memories and a rapidly shifting economy, the sisters find themselves at a painful crossroads: should they fight to preserve the family business and the roots attached to it, or let go of the past and move toward a different future?

Patuá theatre is a distinctive performing art form created by Macao’s Macanese community, officially recognised in 2021 as part of China’s National Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The language used on stage, known as Patuá, is rooted in Portuguese while blending influences from Cantonese, Malay, English, and Spanish. It stands as one of the most vivid reflections of Macao’s multicultural diversity as a city where East meets West.

This latest production is once again written and directed by Miguel de Senna Fernandes, the longtime creative force behind the theatre group. Since leading the troupe in 1993, he has continued to create original works that tell stories rooted in Macao’s culture and everyday life. With “Now What?”, he turns his attention to contemporary social realities and the emotional struggles faced by modern communities — making this one of the festival’s most anticipated local performances.

【Win a Prize: “The Starry Night – The Musical”, in this ever-changing journey of life, where is your “place of comfort”?】

Some people spend a lifetime searching for where they belong. Some places, no matter how long we’ve been away, stay quietly in our hearts forever.

Presented as part of the 36th Macao Arts Festival, “The Starry Night - The Musical” begins with an unexpected blind date, unfolding a story that connects Hong Kong and Foshan through shared memories, family ties, and cultural traditions. When a pair of Shiwan ceramic figurines is rediscovered, long-hidden emotions and cherished connections from an older generation slowly come to light. Starring popular singer-actor Hubert Wu alongside gifted performers, conceived by a group of top theatre creators, this production blends Foshan’s artistic tradition with remarkable storytelling and touching melodies.

Blending Intangible Cultural Heritage elements—including Cantonese Opera and Shiwan into its music and storytelling, the production delicately explores companionship, belonging, and what “home” truly means. Between laughter and tears, the story reminds us that sometimes, a place of comfort is not simply a physical place — but a familiar feeling, a memory, or someone who has always remembered us.

Life takes us through many ups and downs, yet most of us carry a special place in our hearts. It could be an old street, a small café filled with memories, or simply someone who will always welcome you home. These ordinary moments often become the quiet strength that keeps us moving forward.

So, what is your “place of comfort”? What memories or stories does it hold for you?
Share your answer in the comments and tell us about the place that brings you peace.

💡How to participate:
(1) Follow our page;
(2) Like this post and share it publicly on your timeline;
(3) Leave a comment telling us about the place that brings you the greatest sense of comfort and peace, and share the story or memories behind it;
(4) Tag 3 friends and invite them to share their own “place of comfort”!

📃Example comment:
“For me, the place that brings the most comfort is my grandmother’s old living room. When I was little, my whole family would gather there every holiday to share meals and stories. Even though years have passed and things have changed, every time I go back and hear the familiar hum of the TV or smell home-cooked food, I instantly feel at ease. It reminds me that there is always someone waiting for me to come home.”
