Ulaanbaatar Biennale

Ulaanbaatar Biennale Ulaanbaatar city joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2023 and it is now one of 355 cities across more than 90 countries joined this network.

The Ulaanbaatar Biennale is initiated by the City Mayor in cooperation with the Arts and Culture Department of the City Implementing Agency and the Arts Council of Mongolia (ACM) NGO and will be held from June 6th - 20th of 2025. УЛААНБААТАР БИЕННАЛЬ 2025

Нийслэлийн Засаг даргын санаачилгаар Нийслэлийн Соёл, урлагийн газар, Монголын Урлагийн Зөвлөл хамтран “Улаанбаатар биенналь”-ийг анх удаа 202

5 оны 06 дугаар сарын 06-20-ны өдрүүдэд зохион байгуулах гэж байна.
Улаанбаатар хот нь ЮНЕСКО-гийн Бүтээлч хотуудын сүлжээнд 2023 онд нэгдэж, дэлхийн 90 гаруй улсын 355 гаруй бүтээлч хотуудын эгнээнд багтсан нь Монгол улсын соёл, урлагийг дэлхий дахинд сурталчлах, салбарын эзлэх байр суурийг дээшлүүлэхэд ихээхэн түлхэц болж байна.
ЮНЕСКО-гийн Бүтээлч хотуудын сүлжээний үйл ажиллагааны 7 төрөлд Гар урлал ба ардын урлаг /Crafts & Folk Art/, Дизайн урлаг /Design/, Кино урлаг /Film/, Хоолны урлаг /Gastronomy/, Уран зохиол /Literature/, Медиа урлаг /Media Arts/, Хөгжмийн урлаг /Music/ багтдаг.
2025 онд эдгээр 7 төрлийн нэг болох медиа, дүрслэх урлагийг сурталчлан таниулах, түгээн дэлгэрүүлэх чиглэлээр “Улаанбаатар биенналь”-ийг санаачлан, хотын иргэдийн оюун санаа, гоо зүйн мэдрэмж, түүх, соёл, урлаг, уран сайхны танин мэдэхүйн хэрэгцээг хангах, соёлын аялал жуулчлалыг хөгжүүлэх, оршин суугчдын амьдралын чанарыг дээшлүүлэх зорилгоор зохион байгуулж байна.

ULAANBAATAR BIENNALE 2025
The Ulaanbaatar Biennale is initiated by the City Mayor in cooperation with the Arts and Culture Department of the City Implementing Agency and the Arts Council of Mongolia (ACM) NGO and will be held from June 6th - 20th of 2025. This network provides a significant opportunity to promote Mongolian art and culture globally, while also enhancing the prominence of culture and the arts in the city. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network encompasses seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music. In 2025 the Ulaanbaatar Biennale will focus on promoting and disseminating media and visual arts, one of these seven fields and will aim to meet the spiritual, aesthetic, historical, and artistic needs of the city’s residents, contribute to the development of cultural tourism. The main programmer of the Ulaanbaatar Biennale is the Arts Council of Mongolia (NGO), with co-organizers of the Culture and Arts Authority, implementing Agency of Government of Mongolia, Blue Sun Contemporary Art Center, Marketainment Mongolia LLC. The Australian artist and curator Tian Zhang is invited to be the Chief curator of the biennale. The main theme of the Ulaanbaatar biennale is "On the Horizon, Under the Moon" and will will feature a variety of programs, including main and joint international exhibitions, stage and outdoor events, art education programs, curators' and artists' talks and workshops. Улаанбаатар биенналь 2025

Нийслэлийн Засаг даргын Тамгын газар, Нийслэлийн Соёл, урлагийн газраас Монголын Урлагийн Зөвлөл, Хөх Нар Монголын орчин үеийн урлагийн төв, Хүүхдийн урлагийн боловсролыг дэмжих өв сантай хамтран, анхны Улаанбаатар биенналийг 2025 оны 6-р сарын 6-20-ны өдрүүдэд амжилттай зохион байгууллаа.

Нийт 14 хоног, 19 байршилд болсон Улаанбаатар биеннальд Австрали, БНХАУ, Филлипин, Индонези, Непал, Энэтхэг, Франц, Герман, Дани, Солонгос, Хонконг, Тайвань, АНУ, Норвеги, Шинэ Зеланд, Палестин, Нидерланд, Иран, Конго, Киргизстан, Казахстан, Узбекистан зэрэг 25 улсын 130 гаруй уран бүтээлчид оролцож, нийт 15 үзэсгэлэн толилуулагдсан юм.

Улаанбаатар биенналийн хүрээнд үзэсгэлэн толилуулагдахаас гадна хүүхдийн боловсролын хөтөлбөр, ЮНЕСКО-гийн Бүтээлч хотуудын сүлжээний үйл ажиллагааны 7 төрөл болох Гар урлал ба ардын урлаг, Дизайн урлаг, Кино урлаг, Хоолны урлаг, Уран зохиол, Медиа урлаг, Хөгжмийн урлагийн гадаа талбайн хөтөлбөр зэрэг олон төрлийн үйл ажиллагааг багтаасан юм.

The Ulaanbaatar Biennale was sucessfully organized

The City Mayor in cooperation with the Arts and Culture Department of the City Implementing Agency and the Arts Council of Mongolia, Blue Sun Contemporary Art Center of Mongolia, Foundation of Children’s Arts & Culture Education Development of Mongolia organized the first Ulaanbaatar Biennale successfully from June 6 to June 20, 2025.

Over the course of 15 exhibitions across 19 venues, more than 130 artists from 25 countries—including Australia, China, France, Germany, South Korea, and the USA—showcased their work, contributing to an enriching global dialogue through art.

In addition to the exhibitions, the Biennale featured a Children’s Program and a series of outdoor activities, all designed to celebrate UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network. The Network encompasses seven creative fields: Crafts and Folk Art, Design, Film, Gastronomy, Literature, Media Arts, and Music—fostering cross-cultural exchange and community engagement.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the artists, supporters, and visitors who made the first Ulaanbaatar Biennale an unforgettable experience. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2027🧡

In Arabic, generous people are referred to as people of the soil – “ahl al thara”. The English equivalent might be “salt of the earth,” but the reference to “soil” in the Arabic is significant with people referring to themselves as mud, “Teeneh”. These ancient terminologies come from a deep understanding that human and soil are inseparable.

Ahl Al Thara / People of the Soil aims to give glimpses of people of soil from different corners of the earth whose hands and hearts are weaving new visions, rooted in the acknowledgement of the grief we are experiencing and the dream we hold onto that something else must be possible. Most of the footage chronicles several trips to visit people of soil who are part of the Palestine Heirloom Seed Library’s Seed Protectors Project, a program in which seeds from Palestine take refuge across the United States in soil lovingly tended by volunteers. In this video, we focus particularly on California and a moment when a meal, ceremony, and grieving space was conjured on the grounds of the agroecology farm to honor the lost, including two farmer friends from Palestine murdered: elder Abu Nabil, from the West Bank village of Sabastya and beloved youth, Mohammad Saqir, from Gaza. He was targeted by a missile while distributing free vegetables. They are people of the soil. This film is in their honor.

As a river flows from highlands to lowlands, it carves the surface of the earth, sustains life, and preserves the delicate balance of nature. Rivers are an inseparable part of the Earth’s water cycle, acting as vital arteries that connect glaciers, mountains, and valleys to seas and oceans. Flowing before us and beyond us, they shaped landscapes before human memory and will continue to do so into the future.
This artwork draws inspiration from the dynamic flow of rivers that originate from the Kharkhiraa and Turgen Mountains of Mongolia. As the river’s current depends on the terrain, it sometimes rushes fiercely, at other times moves quietly and calmly. This constant transformation reflects the impermanence of time and highlights the preciousness of life’s ever-changing moments.

The work expresses the dual nature of water: fleeting yet eternal, fragile yet resilient. The texture and shadows across the surface evoke the image of ice, capturing both its ephemeral beauty and the delicate condition of its inevitable melting. By arranging the flow into two parallel lines, the piece evokes the seasonal melting of ice, while also reminding us of the rapidly accelerating ice loss in the Arctic, Greenland, and across the globe – and the resulting transformations in the Earth’s ecosystems.

ko ko Mhendo: History, Memory, Resistance, 2024/25

Woodcut print on nepali paper, ko ko mhendo (Oroxylum indicum), dimensions variable

Subas Tamang’s work explores the suppressed histories of Nepal’s Tamang Indigenous community, impacted by 19th-century corvée labor systems. Classified as “masinya matwali” (enslavable alcohol-drinkers), Tamangs were forced into unpaid labor in royal orchards, military service, porterage, and handmade Nepali paper production. These systems caused loss of land, dignity, and wealth, embedding poverty and displacement.

Through woodcut prints, Tamang ancestral landscapes, cosmology, and ecological knowledge are reclaimed, emphasizing dignity and resilience. The sacred Ko Ko Mhendo flower symbolizes strength and resistance, evoking survival’s spiritual depth.

This work is an act of reparation that resists erasure and reasserts Indigenous presence, honoring Tamang memory, land, and cultural vitality.
