Artist profile 🎨🎨
Rupa Khin (born in 2008) is a Yangon-based emerging artist currently pursuing a Diploma in Art at the National University of Arts and Culture. Drawing began as a childhood hobby and has gradually grown into something more meaningful to her. It has become a way of exploring ideas, emotions, and herself. Her practice is still evolving as she experiments with different mediums, allowing her artistic voice to develop naturally through exploration.

Artist Statement 🎨🎨

For a long time, I was overly concerned with being original. I thought creativity meant coming up with ideas that had never existed before. When I couldn't find an "original" idea, I often found myself unable to create at all. This became a barrier in my creative journey.

Over time, my understanding of creativity began to change. I've become less afraid of influence and more open to exploring, experimenting, and finding my own way of creating.
I have always found it difficult to put my thoughts and feelings into words. Through painting, I can come a little closer to expressing what I cannot always say

I am still at the beginning of this journey. I don't have a fixed style or a single subject that defines my work yet. I want to explore different ideas and ways of creating while gradually discovering my own voice.

Artwork Statement 🎨 🎨

(The Butterflies) explores the changes we go through as we move through life. The butterflies inside the ribcages represent the soul, while their different forms and colors reflect the different stages of life; from childhood and youth to adulthood, old age and spiritual freedom.

The work is inspired by the burmese word "လိပ်ပြာ", which carries two meanings:"butterfly" and "soul". Through this connection, the butterflies become a reflection of our inner selves as we grow, change, carry responsibilities, and experience the passage of time.

In the fifth stage, the butterflies are no longer held within the body. They have been released, symbolizing a form of spiritual freedom. Inspired by the Buddhist idea of letting go of attachment and the things that bind us to suffering, this stage represents a state of release beyond the limitations of the physical self. It is not necessarily a final stage that everyone reaches, but rather an idea of freedom and letting go. But perhaps these stages do not look the same for everyone? What stage are you in, and what do your butterflies look like?

Artist : Ingyin Khine 🎨🎨

Ingyin Khine is an artist who has been interested in art since childhood and has continuously developed her practice through self-study. She studied International Relations at the University of East Yangon. To gain a more systematic and fundamental understanding of art, she studied at YYH Art Class in 2021 and attended the Diploma Program at the National University of Arts and Culture in 2025. Her art style is particularly focused on portrait art, exploring human features and emotions, with pencil as her primary medium.

Artist statement 🎨🎨

For me, art is a way of expressing emotions, thoughts, and messages through visual language without always needing words. Although pencil is the medium I am most comfortable with, I enjoy experimenting with watercolor, acrylic, and digital art as well. Exploring unfamiliar styles and mediums allows me to discover new textures, moods, and ways of expression. Through my artworks, I hope to communicate feelings and ideas visually, allowing viewers to connect with the work and find their own interpretations.

Artwork statement 🎨🎨

These two artworks are separate pieces but are connected through one concept: “Background.” As I had not previously focused on traditional Myanmar imagery, I chose the Myanmar traditional marionette as the foundation of the works, connecting the movement of puppets with human existence and replacing the puppet figures with human characters.
In the first artwork, a young woman dances while pretending to be happy because she is controlled by the person behind her. In contrast, the second artwork presents a young man dancing freely and happily because the figure behind him represents support rather than control.

Here, “Background” goes beyond the physical figure shown behind the characters. In real life, our backgrounds can be shaped by love, hatred, money, power, family, environment, and society. These influences can affect our choices, actions, and the person we become. Through these two works, I invite viewers to reflect on their own backgrounds: What is shaping you? How much has it influenced who you have become? And when you dance through life, are you choosing your own movements, or are they being shaped by the background behind you?

While studying Bharatanatyam, I came to feel that this dance is not only about beauty. It is also a way of practicing values through the body.
The salangai (ghungroo) is not just decorative jewelry. It is a symbol of discipline, responsibility, and dedication to the art form. Once the ankle bells are worn, dancers do not wear shoes. Before beginning the dance, they offer respect and greetings to the Guru, music, the earth and ghungroo. After the performance, they again express gratitude and respect. The hand gestures (hasta) are made clearly by painting with alta on the palms and fingers so that the audience can see and understand them and each gesture carries its own meaning, like words in a language.

According to these traditions, I came to understand Bharatanatyam as more than dance. It is a way of practicing values through the body itself. The ankle bells represent commitment rather than decoration, and the act of respect reminds us of humility. The hand gestures become a language that carries meaning without speech. Through this experience, I began to see art not only as beauty, but as a way of living—one that combines discipline, respect, and meaning.
