Listen to the Echo
Inspired by the work of William Kentridge and his poetic exploration of memory, transformation and displacement, this project invited refugee children and teenagers in Remscheid to create their own shadow worlds through movement, drawing and play.
Working with silhouettes, light and improvised shadow theatre, the participants — among them children from Sudan, Guinea and Ukraine — brought their own dreams, fears, memories and hopes into the process. Often without words.
As a photographer, I was less interested in documenting the workshop itself than in capturing the fragile atmosphere that emerged between reality and imagination. The visible folds of the curtain, the edges of the stage, the imperfect setting were important to me. They remind us that this is a constructed space — a place where stories can be told, transformed, and left behind when they become too heavy to carry.
At the same time, the backdrop is not merely a stage. It is part of the temporary home where these children live, sometimes for months, sometimes for years…
BIG thanks to Björn and Susanne Godana Karawanke . For years, we have worked together on projects with refugee children and young people, always creating spaces shaped by trust, respect and care🙏🏽🤍
🖤 Sometimes echoes tell us more than words ever could…
