Youssef Ouchra (1984, Casablanca) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Casablanca, Morocco. Through performance art, installation, video, and sound, he communicates a social analysis that investigates the liminal space between the material world and the spiritual dimension. KE’CH Collective X Youssef Ouchra

AS-SIRAT (الصراط), a large-scale installation inspired by political processions and ceremonial events, in which the viewer becomes the performer, will be located at the main entrance of Africa Basel. Participants will walk a hand-knotted red carpet bordered by velvet ropes on brass poles. Upon reaching hundreds of mechanical bathroom scales embedded in the carpet, we are moved into a space of self-awareness and reflection. Do postures change when we are confronted with a measure of ourselves that we cannot hide? As-Sirat, Arabic for pathway, is understood in Islamic theology to be the narrow bridge to Paradise, thinner than a strand of hair and sharper than a sword, that must be crossed on the Day of Judgement. It is said that the ease with which we cross As-Sirat reveals our judgment of ourselves.

From installation to wearable art.

During the production of the red carpet: AS-SIRAT (الصراط), Youssef Ouchra collaborated with The Makers to transform the cut-out remnants of the red carpet into handcrafted babouches and unique garments.

This collaboration where art, design and handcraft come together, gives new life to materials that carry the story of the artwork.

The pieces are available at the Africa Basel Art Shop.
