What does it mean to « Let the Sun Do the Thinking »?

In our last exhibition, one work stood out for its quietly radical statement about the need to rethink how we design automated systems.

Solar Protocol is an experimental web platform hosted across a network of solar-powered servers, maintained by volunteers around the planet.

When linked together, the network routes web traffic to whichever server is enjoying the most sunshine at any given moment. ☀️

Rather than relying on artificial intelligence, it lets environmental conditions determine where computational work happens, pointing toward what the project calls energy-centred design.

Tega Brain, one of the artists behind the project, puts it simply in the video presented in the exhibition:

What if the internet ran on sunlight? ☀️

Last month, a small group of hands-on explorers found out — by building one themselves. Guided by artist Julius Schmiedel, participants assembled a fully functional solar-powered internet server from just ~15 parts.

One of the two servers built during the workshop will soon be installed at Facilitec in Esch-sur-Alzette, joining the global network of Solar Protocol servers — a living, solar-powered internet infrastructure scattered across the planet. 🌍

☀️ Et si modifier les effets du soleil devenait notre dernier recours climatique ?

Staring at the Sun est une installation documentaire de science-fiction présentée sur deux écrans se faisant face, une invitation à contempler l’une des questions les plus vertigineuses de notre époque.

En 4 chapitres, l’œuvre explore la géo-ingénierie solaire : ces techniques qui visent à modifier délibérément, et à grande échelle, les systèmes climatiques de la Terre. Des premiers modèles informatiques des années 1950 aux jumeaux virtuels de notre planète, la simulation climatique n’a jamais été aussi précise, ni aussi chargée d’enjeux.

Basé sur des entretiens réels et portés par des protagonistes fictifs, les projets décrits révèlent les ambitions scientifiques, les intérêts économiques et les dilemmes éthiques qui entourent ces technologies d’intervention sur des systèmes d’une complexité extrême.

Qui a le droit de modifier le climat de la Terre ? Et au nom de qui ?

☀️ Et si on laissait le soleil décider ?

C’est la question que pose Solar Protocol, une infrastructure expérimentale qui consiste en un réseau de serveurs internet alimentés à l’énergie solaire, répartis aux quatre coins du monde.

Entretenus par des bénévoles, ces serveurs sont interconnectés et redirigent automatiquement le trafic web vers l’endroit qui reçoit le plus de soleil à un instant donné.

En ancrant les décisions dans les dynamiques environnementales plutôt que dans de simples indicateurs de performance, Solar Protocol remet les questions d’énergie et de ses limites au cœur du processus de conception.

This is the question asked by Solar Protocol — an experimental web platform hosted across a network of solar-powered servers around the world.

Maintained by volunteers, these servers are interconnected and automatically redirect web traffic to whichever location is receiving the most sunlight at any given moment.

By grounding decisions in environmental dynamics — rather than purely in performance metrics — Solar Protocol brings questions of energy and its limits back to the heart of the design process.

« Je ne vois pas votre visage. Ce soir, c’est vous que j’ai choisi·e. »

Dès samedi 21 mars, des faisceaux lumineux traversent la Place de l’Hôtel de Ville à Esch-sur-Alzette. Ils choisissent. Ils suivent. Ils exposent. Guidés par une caméra thermique et une intelligence artificielle, ils décident qui sera mis en lumière, et pendant combien de temps.

Track Tracy est une installation interactive de Daems van Remoortere. Elle transforme les passants en protagonistes d’une chorégraphie qu’ils n’ont pas choisie. Une œuvre qui interroge la surveillance algorithmique, la protection de la vie privée et notre rapport à l’espace public.
