Walking Through the Shadows

“Walking Through the Shadows” is a portrait created using candle smoke, where a figure emerges from a dark, blurred background. The smoky texture gives the artwork a soft, ethereal feel, suggesting fading memory and hidden presence. Adinkra symbols in the sunglasses represent peace, adding cultural meaning to the piece. The work explores identity, struggle, and the search for calm within darkness.

Artwork Title: Echoes of Independence

Medium: Coffee, fine liners, coloured pencils, charcoal

Description:
Echoes of Independence is a visual meditation on memory, leadership, identity, and the enduring spirit of freedom. The composition weaves together portraiture, landscape, and symbolism to reflect the layered journey of Lesotho’s independence and the voices that continue to shape its future.

The rising sun over the mountains speaks to hope, renewal, and the promise of a nation continually awakening to its potential. The figures represent generational dialogue past leadership, present voices, and the unseen future reminding us that independence is not a single moment in history, but a living conversation carried forward by the people. The horse and aloe appear together as symbols of endurance, protection, healing, and Basotho heritage reflecting the resilience of a nation that continues to stand strong and rooted in its identity. The spiral form suggests continuity, growth, and the echoing rhythm of progress, while the number 60 represents the sixty years since Lesotho gained its independence, honoring both the passage of time and the legacy being carried forward.

The use of coffee as pigment introduces warmth and earthiness, grounding the artwork in organic texture and memory. Fine liners define structure and detail, coloured pencils bring vibrancy and emotional depth, while charcoal adds contrast and weight, mirroring the balance between struggle and triumph.

This piece invites viewers to reflect on where we come from, who we are becoming, and how our collective stories continue to echo through time.
