Do you know the story behind this giant aircraft tyre at Norton Bridge? ✈️
At first glance,
it looks like just another roadside attraction. Many people stop here for a quick photo before continuing their journey.
But this tyre carries the memory of one of the most heartbreaking aviation tragedies in Sri Lanka. 💔
On the night of 4 December 1974,
A Martinair DC-8 aircraft crashed into Virgin Hills, near Norton Bridge, while approaching Colombo for a scheduled refuelling stop.🥺
The aircraft was carrying 191 passengers and crew, most of them Indonesian pilgrims returning home after completing the Hajj pilgrimage.🥺
Sadly, every single person on board lost their life.💔
The giant tyre displayed here is believed to have been recovered from the crashed aircraft. Today, it stands as a quiet reminder of the lives that were lost and a place where visitors pause to remember a tragedy that should never be forgotten.
The next time you pass through Norton Bridge, take a moment to look beyond the tyre. It’s not just a piece of rubber,
it’s a piece of history. 💔🤍
🕊️ May all those who lost their lives rest in peace.
