🎬 The "Invisible" Rule of Great Filmmaking: The 180° Rule
Ever wondered why some movie scenes feel "right" while others make your head spin? It usually comes down to the 180-Degree Rule.
What is it?
Imagine a straight line (the Axis of Action) connecting two characters in a scene. To keep the audience oriented, the camera should stay on one side of that line.
🧠 Why does it matter?
Spatial Logic: It keeps Character A on the left and Character B on the right. If you "cross the line," they suddenly swap places on screen, making it look like they’re talking to the back of each other's heads!
Clean Eyelines: It ensures that when a character looks off-camera, they are actually looking "at" the person they’re talking to.
🚫 Breaking the Rule
Sometimes, directors like Stanley Kubrick or Christopher Nolan intentionally break this rule to make the audience feel uneasy, confused, or like the world is shifting.
