BIOGRAPHY

Rudrani was born in May of 1992, and is the daughter of half-Sri Lankan, half-Norwegian artist, Rahju. Growing up in the idyllic countryside of Kandy- the hill capital of the island- she was surrounded by her father’s artwork and materials, which influenced her early affinity with the brush, and began doodling and painting in an abstract style in her father’s studio at the age of one. Home-schooled initially with her parents and younger brother, Ravana, Rudrani attended an international school in 2001 at age eight, and spent four years there before dropping out prior to her thirteenth birthday, prompting a creativity-based education throughout her teen years.

For six years her father tutored her in formal art lessons. She began with the basics- line, shape, form, shading, perspective, composition, etc- with pencil in her first year, and moved on to charcoal and ink in her second year. Her first transition into the world of colour and paint came with lessons in watercolour. Finally, she began working with acrylics and oils. Throughout this period, she covered all forms of subject matter, beginning with still-lives and moving on to figures, portraits and landscapes.

Rudrani’s work centres around fantasy and imagination, though her other interests include portraits, landscapes and equine depictions. She paints with acrylic on canvas, and seeks to work with the flow of each painting, allowing the process to carve her imagery as much as her concepts. Rudrani’s motto for painting is, “allow the painting to paint itself, decide how it wants to look and tell you where it wants to go, and then follow obediently.” Her first series of work- following the completion of her art education- was an exploration into femininity, fantasy, and nature, and culminated in the ‘World of Fae’ collection, which was showcased at her debut solo exhibition in 2013 in the country’s capital, Colombo.

Her hobbies include reading (especially artists’ biographies, fantasy novels and anything that could inspire her at the easel) and writing, listening to music and appreciating all forms of creativity, playing chess, posing for photographer friends, and being in nature. She is vegan and passionate about animal rights, and currently lives and works at her childhood home in Kandy with her dad and two feline companions.
