Gustav Mahler's Piano Quartet in A minor is one of the favourites of our Academists. Four of our young Academists will be performing the quartet at their next concert and here are some snaps from the rehearsals-in-progress.

Piano : Janulie Liyanage
Violin : Viru Dayaratne
Viola : Hesith Nethmal
Cello : Ravipathi Kandage

It is Mahler's sole surviving piece of chamber music which he started composing when he was just 15 - 16 years of age during his stay at the Vienna Conservatory. This single movement piece was meant to be the first movement to the abandoned quartet scored for Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello.

On this day, 14 May 2022, we are celebrating the 125th anniversary of the March King's premiere of the immortal patriotic favourite, 'Stars and Stripes Forever' on 14 May 1897 in Philadelphia.

Following an Act of Congress in 1987, it was officially adopted as the national march of the United States of America. When someone asked the composer, John Philip Sousa, who influenced him to compose the work he replied, "God-and I say this in all reverence!" and to his imagination, it was a genuine inspiration, irresistible, complete and definite.

Here is the Gustav Mahler Orchestra Academy performing 'Stars and Stripes Forever' under the baton of Vidhurinda Samaraweera. This performance was recorded on 23 April 2022 at the Lionel Wendt Theatre, Colombo at the 2022 Season Opening Concert of the Gustav Mahler Society of Colombo.
