Celadon Maebyeong with Reverse Inlaid Peony Design (Part 1) - Carving the Peony Motif
This is the process of carving a peony motif onto a maebyeong, referencing the designs of Goryeo celadon artifacts from the 12th and 13th centuries.
This process involves incising peony flowers and stems that completely cover the surface—a design frequently observed in Goryeo celadon artifacts. Subsequently, the surrounding background is carved away, leaving only the motif to stand out in relief. When white slip is applied over it, dried, and the surface is trimmed, the motif retains the natural color of the celadon clay body, while the background is filled with the white slip.
This decorative method is known as the 'reverse inlay' (Yeoksanggam) technique. Unlike the standard inlay technique, which carves the motif itself and fills it with slip to apply color, this technique reverses the color contrast between the motif and the background by carving out the background and filling it with slip. It is a distinctive style primarily identified in Goryeo celadon artifacts.
The completed work will be finished after a 3-day bisque firing and a 6-day high-temperature firing in a wood-fired kiln.
This is a technique transmitted through six generations from the master.
