🍀Closing Next Saturday

Tai Hwa Goh studied Western painting at Seoul National University where she also earned her MFA in printmaking.  After moving to the United States, she continued her studies in printmaking and sculpture at the University of Maryland. Her practice involves labor-intensive processes of printing on Korean hanji or translucent Pellon fabric, then cutting, folding, and layering these prints to create paper sculptures. These are then combined with random objects or litter found in her neighbourhood and organically arranged throughout the exhibition space to resemble a dreamlike garden.

New Lectures Open to All at H-flux Gallery

H-flux 갤러리는 단순한 전시 공간을 넘어, 예술적 담론과 교육이 공존하는 플랫폼입니다. 올해부터 기획한 대중을 위한 인문학 강의 시리즈의 첫 프로그램으로, 미술평론가 최광진 선생님을 모시고 ‘한국미학 특강’을 개설합니다. 이 프로그램은 선생님의 저서인 시리즈 5권의 내용을 총 38강에 걸쳐 순차적으로 강의합니다. 서양, 중국, 일본과의 비교를 통해서 한국인의 얼과 미의식을 이해하고, 자기답고 창조적인 삶을 모색하는 시간이 되리라고 생각합니다.

많은 분들의 관심으로 신청이 곧 마감될 예정입니다. 희망하시는 분들은 갤러리로 문의 바랍니다. 감사합니다.

강의 기간: 2025년 9월 ~ 2027년 7월

We are delighted to announce that, beginning this September, we are launching a new lecture series by the renowned art critic Cho Kwangjin on the subject of Korean aesthetics. These lectures, open to the general public, will be held from 7pm-9pm on the first and third Thursdays in September. Each lecture will focus on Cho Kwangjin‘s books on Korean aesthetics and describe the contrast between Korean and other East Asian cultures, such as Japan and China. We warmly invite you to attend these lectures and explore the unique philosophy and beauty of Korean art.

고태화 개인전 《Good Luck, Babe!》 개최

종로구 서촌에 위치한 에이치플럭스(H-flux)갤러리는 현재 뉴욕을 중심으로 활동 중인 고태화 작가의 개인전 “Good Luck, Babe!”를 전시중이다. 이번 전시는 작가가 한국에서 15년 만에 개최하는 두 번째 개인전인다. 이번 전시에서 작가는 기억과 감각, 상상이 교차하는 판화설치작업을 통해 내면의 정원을 시각화한다.

고태화 작가는 서울대학교 미대에서 서양화를 전공하고, 동 대학원에서 판화로 석사과정을 마쳤다. 이후 미국으로 이주하여 메릴랜드 대학교에서 판화와 조각을 전공했다. 작가는 한지나 얇고 투명한 종이질의 부직포 펠런(Pellon) 위에 판화를 찍고, 그렇게 반복적으로 찍어낸 여러장의 판화를 자르고, 접고, 겹치는 과정을 통해 입체로 된 페이퍼조각을 만든다. 그리고 일상에서 수집한 오브제들과 조합하여 전시장 공간안에 마치 정원을 조성하듯이 유기적으로 배치한다. 작가는 이번 전시에 대해서, “일상과 여행에서 마주치는 평범하지만 나에겐 의미 있는 식물들을 통해, 자연이 가진 유기적 흐름과 인간이 만든 인공 구조 사이의 긴장, 그리고 삶의 경험 속에 축적된 기억과 현재의 감각이 만나는 지점들을 시각적으로 풀어내고자 했다(작가노트)”라고 말한다.

이번 전시는 딸을 위해 네잎클로버를 찾아다니다 찾지 못해 대신 직접 만들어주면서 시작되었다고 말한다. 그의 작업은 우리가 일상에서 흔히 볼수 있는 자연의 형상들을 닮아있지만, 실재로 존재하는 자연은 아니다. 이는 작가의 기억 속에 저장된 자연의 이미지들이 감각적으로 재배치되고 재구성된 내면의 생태정원이다. 이는 단순히 판타지한 공간이 아니라, 딸에게 행운을 바라는 간절한 소망과 감정이 살아 숨쉬는 상상의 공간이자 새로운 현실과 감각을 생성하는 공간이다.

고태화 작가는 “뒤뜰에 꽃이 피는 일상적 순간이 우리 삶에 더 깊은 통찰을 줄 수 있음을 경험하도록 초대한다“라고 말한다. 판타지가 환상적인 이미지 너머의 감정과 기억, 이상을 실현할 수 있은 공간이 되기도 하듯이, 작가의 종이정원은 현실과 비현실, 자연과 인공, 그리고 친숙함과 낯섬이 공존하는 공간이다. 이곳에서 우리는 경계의 모호함을 경험하고 본질을 성찰하게 된다.

고태화작가는 2007년부터 뉴욕과 워싱턴 D.C.를 중심으로 활발하게 활동하고 있으며, Art Mora(NJ), Target Gallery(VA), NARS Foundation(NY), AHL Foundation(NY), 한국문화원(Korean Cultural Center, DC), Gallery Aferro, Children’s Museum of Manhattan 등에서 열린 다수의 개인전 및 단체전에 참여해 왔다. 2017년에는 T & W 재단과 뉴욕의 알재단 (AHL Foundation)이 공동으로 주관한 제14회 현대미술공모전에서 금상을 수상했다. 또한 New Jersey Individual Artist Fellowship, Museum of Arts and Design, Lower East Side Printshop, Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, NARS Foundation International Residency 등에서 레지던시 프로그램에 참여하며 활발한 활동을 이어오고 있다.

The artist states, “The exhibition “Good Luck, Babe” visualizes points of tension between nature’s organic progress and artificial structures. Working with plants - ordinary yet deeply meaningful to me - that I have encountered in daily life and during my travels, I explore the intersection of memories and present sensations shaped by experience.” This ecological space invite viewers to realise how small, quotidian moments—such as a flower blooming in the backyard—can offer profound insight into our lives.
