I've watched this video about 20 times consecutively, and it would be unfair if I didn't share it with you.
I honestly don't know who was more fascinated by the dance-the dancers, the musicians, or the photographer.
The music was pelting and demanding, the dancers were energized and moving with such intensity that it invited the drummers to step up even more.
Then there was the photographer, cheering on the dance and saying to the leader (as if he could've heard him lol), "Go in de middle, Go in de middle!"--something he knew had to happen for this performance.
This dance is called WILDMAS, and by now you can probably see why it is the crowd's favourite and one of the most loved dances in the masquerade repertoire-even by the "photographer" lol.
One thing I want to highlight among the many impressive aspects of this performance is the strategic leadership on display. Watch how commanding the leader is with the use of the tomahawk, moving in sync with the rhythm of the drums. His reflexes are sharp, precise, and on point, keeping the musicians alert, engaged, and ready for every cue.
What is even more fascinating is how his teammates respond. They know exactly how to follow his leadership, even when new stunts and movements emerge in the moment. There is a word for that--trust. Trust built through practice, discipline, consistency, and a shared understanding of the art form.
That level of cohesion doesn't happen by accident. It is earned and that is part of what makes WILDMAS so captivating and pulsating.
