Meet mzee Robinson Kamau's family from Maai mahiu. In the photo, mzee Kamau is the elderly gentleman seated with a cap. Mzee has 7 grown children - 5 sons and 2 daughters. Of the 5 sons, 4 live with disabilities and use wheelchairs. They are fully dependent and cannot do basic things on their own, including going to the toilet. For years, their only toilet option was a pit latrine a few metres away from the house. This made it impossible for them to access it. As a result, they had to relieve themselves in a bucket, and this was very hard for their old, sick parents to handle every single day. Last month, their mother passed away. The other brother also left his own family to come home and care for them. The family was left traumatized, overwhelmed, and without support. This is where Nyota Angavu CBO stepped in. We visited the family to console them and listen to their story. After understanding their situation, we got to work - not alone, but through partnership. Through networking, we connected them to well wishers from Nakuru who have now come on board to support the family. The work has already started and is progressing well. It includes expanding their sleeping room to create more space for wheelchair movement, constructing an indoor toilet and bathroom to end the bucket system, installing water and septic tanks, and adding a wardrobe for their clothes.
This is what Nyota Angavu CBO does. We identify vulnerable families, we listen, we partner, we connect, and we ensure no one is left behind. Our role is to bridge between those in need and those willing to help.

Today around 3pm at Mogas, Maai mahiu - Naivasha Rd, we found a young lady with her baby, distressed and confused. She shared that her husband has continually assaulted her. Last night while drunk, he injured her arm, head and ankle, and tried to send her away in the middle of the night but neighbours intervened. She has been in Maai mahiu for two months, brought from Mumias by the husband where both come from. Together with pastor Christine and pastor Amos of Faith Ministry Chapel Immanuel, we assisted her report to Maai mahiu police station and secured her a safe place, and we'll ensure she gets treatment. If you see someone in distress, don't walk away. Stop listening and help. You can save a life. We are our brothers and sisters keepers.

🎓 Celebrating Youth Empowerment in Naivasha 🎓
Yesterday members of Nyota Angavu Community Based Organization were glad to attend the graduation ceremony at ACK church, Naivasha where youth from different parts of Naivasha and Gilgil graduated with various life skills.
This program is run by K-NOTE, an empowering program dedicated to equipping vulnerable youths from humble backgrounds with skills to transform their lives.
We're especially proud that some youths from Maai mahiu were among the graduates. Seeing them take this step forward reminds us why partnership matters.
At Nyota Angavu CBO, we continue to work with organizations like K-NOTE to uplift young people and women from low-income families in Maai mahiu. Together, we're creating pathways for skills, dignity and better livelihoods.
Congratulations to all the graduates! Your future is bright, and we're honored to walk this journey with you 💙

THE AGIKUYU: Keepers of the Mountain, people of peace and craft 🇰🇪

Meet the Agikuyu - Kenya's largest Community, named after the great fig tree Mugumo and children of Gikuyu and Mumbi. From the slopes of Mt. Kenya ( Kirinyaga), they built a culture of wisdom, hard work, and beauty.

Traditional Life:
🛖 Homesteads ( Mucii): Round huts of mud and thatch. The granary Ikumbi stood tall - food security was sacred.
👗 Attire: Women wore soft goat-skin skirts Muthuru with beaded necklaces, copper coils Nyori, and ear ornaments. Men in cloaks Nguo and Colobus monkey skin.
⚒️ Craft and Tools: Clay pots Nyonjo, three-legged stools Giti, gourds Kinya, and shields Ngo for warriors.
⚔️ Warriors ( Anake): Bravery earned through service, protecting land and cattle.
👑 Rulership: Led by a council of elders Kiama Kia Athuri - Justice through wisdom, not kings.
💍 Marriage: Began with Ruracio - dowry of goats, honey and traditional beer, sealing two families.
🧑‍🦳 Women's Journey: From girl Kairitu, to initiate, to wife Mutumia, to elder Cucu - honoured at every stage.

The Agikuyu spirit: Farming the rich highlands, worshipping Ngai on Mt. Kenya, and saying "ugi na thaayu" - peace be with you.

We are Nyota Angavu Community Based Organization from Maai mahiu - proud to share our heritage with the world.

Our culture is our strength. Our past is our foundation.
