Awards: Excellent or Popularity

Or today, are they they synonymous?

Once upon a time, journalists looked for excellence.

They followed people doing remarkable work and wrote about them because their achievements mattered.

Today, you receive emails like this:

"We have followed your great achievements and would like to feature you on

our cover."

Then comes the small detail: "This opportunity will cost USD 3,000."

In other words, you can now buy your own recognition.

The same thing seems to be happening with some competitions. A friend recently asked people to vote for her photography entry. On opening the link, one discovers voting requires payment.

So the obvious question is:

Who wins? The most talented photographer? Or the one whose friends can afford to pay for the most votes?

Even in awards, jurors with expertise often shortlist entries, but public voting can carry huge weight.

And public voting often reflects popularity, followers, and social influence.

But here is the real question.

Are popularity and excellence the same thing?

Or are we slowly moving from celebrating skill and hard work to celebrating visibility and influence?

Curious to hear your thoughts.

Who should decide on award winners? The public, experts, weight of pockets or all?
