Kenya National Commision on Human Rights Our Mandate is to act as a watch dog over the government in the are of human rights and provide leadership in moving the country towards a human rights state.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is an autonomous National Human Rights Institution first established by a Kenyan Act of Parliament in 2002. KNCHR became operational in July 2003. Following the promulgation of the new Constitution of Kenya on August 27, 2010, and the passing of the KNCHR Act 2011, the Commission was transformed into a constitutional body. Our Vision

Kenya’s National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights (NAP) is currently under review following the completion of its five-year implementation period. As the joint Secretariat leading the NAP implementation process, KNCHR and Office of the Attorney General, with support from the Danish Institute for Human Rights are hosting a two-day capacity-building workshop on the NAP review.

The workshop brings together representatives from government, business associations, and civil society organisations working across various thematic areas. It aims to strengthen stakeholders’ understanding of Business and Human Rights (BHR) and establish a shared foundation for their meaningful and effective participation in the review process.

KNCHR has expressed concern over the potential human rights implications arising from recent Government directives and public statements concerning foreign nationals engaged in small-scale businesses and trade in Kenya.

The Commission’s concern follows a directive issued by H.E. President William Samoei Ruto on 2nd September 2026 regarding the closure of small businesses operated by foreign nationals, as well as a subsequent Press Statement issued on 6th September 2026 by the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry clarifying the Government’s position on work visa applications for foreign nationals.

KNCHR calls for a human rights-based approach- HRBA in the enforcement of immigration and business regulations, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all measures undertaken uphold human dignity, equality, non-discrimination, due process and the rule of law.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR ) is deeply concerned that the ongoing nationwide nurses’ strike has escalated from a labour dispute into a national public health and human rights crisis requiring urgent intervention at the highest levels of the National and County Governments.

The disruption threatens the rights of patients to life, the highest attainable standard of health, emergency medical treatment and dignity.
