Big beak. Bright colours. Lots of personality.

This toucan project allowed the 7-Year-Old to work with shape, colour, pattern and composition while creating a recognisable subject in their own style.

We love projects like this because technical skills and imagination to work side by side - A child does not have to choose between “learning to draw properly” and “being creative.” They can do both.

There is something magical about watching a young artist discover how colour, light, and reflection can transform a simple scene.

In this painting, our young artist explored a warm sunset sky, distant landscape, and calm water - then used reflected light on the water to bring the composition together.

Through the process, they practised colour mixing, blending, value, composition, and reflection while learning that a painting does not have to be perfectly realistic to communicate a mood.

At Artterlly, we give young artists the space to experiment, make creative choices, and build their skills through hands-on projects.

Drawing people is hard. So we practise.

Human figures can be one of the most intimidating subjects for a young artist -proportions, movement, clothing, hands, and posture all have to work together.

This sketch shows a student beginning to observe the figure as a collection of shapes and forms rather than trying to draw every detail at once.

That shift in thinking is a big part of becoming a stronger artist.

At Artterlly, we do not expect perfection. We teach students how to look, break things down, practise, and keep going.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT | Same Composition, Different Creative Approaches

What happens when two young artists are given the same still-life composition?

They create two completely different interpretations.

These two young artists, ages 9 and 10, explored the same arrangement of a bottle, cup, and fruit - but each chose a different way to see and represent it.

One explored colour, shape, and simplified forms, while the other focused on observation, line, proportion, and shading.

At Artterlly, we believe art education is not about teaching children to copy the same picture. It is about giving them the skills to observe, experiment, think creatively, and develop their own artistic voice.

“There is a difference between teaching a child to draw and teaching a child to become an artist.”

Teaching a child to draw can mean teaching them shapes, proportions, shading, perspective, and technique. And those things matter.

But becoming an artist is bigger.

It involves learning how to observe, how to make choices, how to develop ideas, how to experiment, and how to communicate something that exists in your mind and bring it into the world.

At Artterlly, we are interested in nurturing young artists, not simply teaching children how to reproduce a picture. Our goal is to help children discover what they have to say - and give them the tools to say it.

When colour becomes mood.

This student took the idea of a sunset and pushed it into a much more dramatic colour palette - purple, pink, orange, and gold.

The reflection across the water adds another layer, while the dark trees and figures create contrast against the glowing sky.

One of our favourite things about teaching art is seeing students begin to understand that they don't always have to paint the world exactly as it looks - They can also paint how the world feels.

Learning to blend colour into the atmosphere.

This project focused on one of the most important painting skills: creating smooth transitions between colours.

From deep blue through green and into bright yellow, the student explored how colours can move across a page to create a sense of sky, distance, and atmosphere.

Then came the silhouettes - mountains, birds, and the moon - to complete the scene - a great reminder that even a simple-looking painting can teach several important skills at once.
