𝐁𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭

The Holy Father has appointed Msgr. Obed Muriungi Karobia, OFM Conv., as the new Auxiliary Bishop of Nairobi. In an announcement made today by the Holy See Press Office, the member of the Order of Friars Minor Conventual (OFM Conv.) will, upon his episcopal ordination, assist Most Rev. Philip Anyolo, Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Nairobi, in the pastoral governance of the Archdiocese, alongside Auxiliary Bishop David Kamau.

Fr. Obed Muriungi Karobia was born in Meru, Kenya, on June 29, 1979. He made his simple profession on July 24, 2004, his solemn profession on October 10, 2010, and was ordained to the priesthood on July 28, 2012.

As a member of the Franciscan Conventuals, Msgr. Obed was elected the first Minister Provincial of the newly established Province of St. Francis of Assisi in Kenya in September 2019. Until his appointment, he has been serving as the Supreme Moderator of the Franciscan Servants of Mary Queen of Love Fraternity, a religious community of priests and brothers.

Prior to being appointed the first Superior of the Province in Kenya, the 46-year-old friar also served as the Vocations Promoter for the Conventual Franciscan Friars in Kenya.

He becomes the first Conventual Franciscan friar and missionary to be appointed a bishop in Kenya since the Order established its inaugural mission in the country in 1984, with its foundation in Ruiri, Meru.

Lenten Campaign 2026 – Week 3: Sanctity and Dignity of Human Life

Human life is sacred and must always be protected and respected.

This week’s Lenten reflection reminds us that economic hardship, exploitation, violence and injustice can threaten the dignity and sanctity of human life. From human trafficking and organ trade to extrajudicial killings and gender-based violence, many lives today are at risk of being treated as commodities rather than gifts from God.

The Constitution of Kenya affirms the right to life and the inherent dignity of every person and Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that every human being is created in the image and likeness of God.

As Christians and citizens, we are called to build a culture that protects life and upholds human dignity, especially for the poor, vulnerable and marginalised.

During this Lenten season, we are invited to:

• Pray for greater respect for the sanctity of life
• Support vulnerable families and communities
• Speak out against violence, exploitation, and injustice
• Promote systems that protect and uphold human dignity

Together, let us work towards a society where every human life is valued, protected and treated with dignity.

Jumatano ya majivu ni mwanzo wa kipindi cha kwaresima katika kanisa. Ni ishara ya kuanza kwa siku arobaini za kutafakari kwa undani fumbo kuu la upendo wa Mungu linalofunuliwa kwa kujitoa kwake na kufa msalabani, kifo cha aibu ili kuichukua aibu yetu.

Majivu ni ishara ya majuto, nayo hufanywa visakramenti kwa kubarikiwa na kanisa. Tunapopakwa majivu katika paji la uso hutusaidia kutafakari na kutukumbusha kuwa wanadamu sisi tu mavumbi na mavumbini tutarudi. Hutukumbusha zaidi kuwa maisha ya hapa duniani tunapita na safari yetu itakamilika pale tutakapoungana na Bwana na mwokozi wetu katika ufalme wako.
