Gems from Kongo, and from the ways of our Ancestors.
Roots run deep, for in the mosaic of lineage, I find my citizenship, my identity, and a network of allies. A man without his clan is like a wingless grasshopper, navigating the journey of life with a missing piece. Only a fool disrespects his mother and father. Only a fool causes pain to his parents.

Wisdom in Proverbs: You Send the Hare to the Elephant. 🐇🐘
Let us embrace the beauty of intergenerational bonds and the importance of respecting our elders.
This proverb teaches us to value the insight of those who have weathered life's storms and navigated its complex terrain. Our elders carry within them the stories of our people, the lessons of our history, and the keys to our cultural identity. By sending the hare to the elephant, we not only show respect for our elders but also ensure that their wisdom continues to guide us.

The militant nature of the Nandi and the fact that they had won a war against the Maasai gave the Nandi the skills to put up the longest resistance against the British. 10 years of giving Britain hell. The Arabs also swore to not pass across the Nandi lands.

It is sad that our education system has denied us knowledge of the struggle our Ancestors faced in their resistance. Even weird is that w are taught colonization had benefits, some fools they wanted us to be. But when you learn that our Ancestors were fighting for us, it changes you. We will take a deep dive into the Nandi resistance. It is not yet Uhuru, we have our roles to play today.

The Nandi have a beautiful history of bravery and courage. We have been known for our military skills. In fact, in the Pharaoh's day in ancient Kemet (Ancient Egypt) (also think of the name Emet meaning country) the Kalenjin people and the Akamba people were the military and intelligence of the day. You will never learn this in school, because you would take pride in yourselves, and you would be empowered to live an extraordinary life instead of the mediocre that we are offered.

Wake up Nandi people. The war is not over.

The Nandi people and the Kalenjin Community at large have always been environmentally conscious people. We have always planted trees, embraced sustainable living, maintained rivers and all in all revered nature. We intuitively knew nature was spiritual.

By celebrating World Environment Day, Truben Cultural Centre reaffirms our shared responsibility to protect and nurture the planet. It serves as a beacon, reminding us to tread lightly upon the Earth and foster a sustainable future for generations to come.

Join us in celebrating this important day and honouring the wisdom of our Kalenjin ancestors. Let's continue their legacy by embracing eco-friendly practices, raising awareness about environmental issues, and advocating for positive change. Together, we can make a difference!

Sotonik are part and parcel of most Nandi households and other Kalenjins as well. The sotonik give the milk and mursik a nice flavour. Many young people today don't really know much about them because their usage has declined and sometimes they are ornamental objects and wall hangings. But they have deep cultural significance as they through the decorations and the different types, shapes and sizes, carry the culture and customs of the Nandi. Some are allowed for ceremonies and some for personal use and not just for anybody, some were specifically for old men, some for children's milk, some for warriors and others for putting herbs, women had theirs too.
We will learn more as we continue.

"Preserving Our Ancestral Legacy: Celebrating World Heritage Day through the Eyes of the Nandi-Kalenjin Community"

The Nandi-Kalenjin community, one of Kenya's indigenous groups, has a rich cultural heritage that spans centuries. From their language, beliefs, customs, and practices, the Nandi-Kalenjin have carefully preserved their traditions and passed them down through generations.

Their language, Nandi, is a dialect of the Kalenjin language and is spoken by over one million people in the Rift Valley region of Kenya. It is a tonal language, meaning the tone in which a word is spoken can alter its meaning. For instance, the word 'siet' can mean cowife but it can also mean the happy time when initiates are coming out in a group to announce that their initiatic period is coming to an end.

The Nandi-Kalenjin community also has unique beliefs and customs. We believe in a supreme being, Asis, who created the world and all living things. They also had a strong connection to their ancestors and believe they play a vital role in their daily lives. Unfortunately, that connection with ancestors was demonized yet it was one of the sources of African greatness.

One of the most significant customs in the Nandi-Kalenjin community is the circumcision ceremony, which is a rite of passage for young boys. During this ceremony, the boys are circumcised and are taught about their responsibilities as men in their community. It is also a time for the community to come together to celebrate and offer blessings to the young boys.

The Nandi-Kalenjin community is also known for their love for athletics, particularly running. They have produced some of the world's best long-distance runners, including the legendary Kipchoge Eliud, Pamela Jelimo and many others the list is quite literally endless, and we have nicknames like Eldoret Express for them, we name streets and buildings after them.,.the whole affair is usually exciting.

As for me, as a Nandi, I am proud of the fact that our military organization was so strategic that we were never sold into slavery, and also the fact that we resisted British rule for so long until the Brits has to resort to trickery. We are tough people. Since long ago, it's why we also made most of Pharaohs' military.

As we celebrate World Heritage Day, it is essential to recognize and appreciate the cultural heritage of the Nandi-Kalenjin community. Their language, beliefs, customs, and practices are a vital part of their identity and contribute to the rich cultural diversity of Kenya and the world.

So it's Kurbet. I had said Kurubet. But it's Kurbet. These wooden forked traditional spoons always fascinated me growing up, until I saw what they could do. Every household should have a couple, they also help when making Musarek - Porridge.
