🎬🏆 KAKUMA YOUNG FILMMAKER SHINES AT ATEKER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Real King, a young and talented filmmaker from Kakuma Refugee Camp, has made a remarkable achievement in the local film industry.

During yesterday’s Gala Night of the Ateker International Film Festival, held at Ato Rites Resort, Kakuma, Saleh’s short film “Scrolling Me” was among the Best Nominated Films of the festival. 🎥🏆

What makes Saleh’s journey even more inspiring is that he is a self-taught filmmaker. No one formally taught him filmmaking, and he did not attend a film school or institution to study the skill. Through his own passion, determination, creativity, and continuous effort to learn, he has developed himself into one of the promising filmmakers from Kakuma Refugee Camp and Turkana County.

His story is a powerful reminder that talent, passion, self-learning, and determination can open doors—even when formal opportunities are limited.

👏 Congratulations to Saleh Real King for representing the creativity and talent of Kakuma on the film festival stage.

🎬 Kakuma has talent. Kakuma has stories. Kakuma has filmmakers.

UN Visit to Kakuma Highlights Push for Inclusive Development

A three-day visit by 14 United Nations agency heads to Kakuma and Kalobeyei, which ended on September 4, highlighted renewed efforts to move refugee support beyond humanitarian aid toward long-term development benefiting both refugees and host communities.

Led by Dr. Garry Conille, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, and Fatima Mohammed Cole, UNHCR Kenya Representative, the delegation engaged national and Turkana County leaders on strengthening public services, expanding livelihoods, improving infrastructure and promoting social cohesion.

Discussions focused on the Government-led Shirika Plan and the Kalobeyei Integrated Socio-Economic Development Plan (KISEDP), which aim to integrate refugee support into government-led development systems.

Turkana Deputy Governor Dr. John Erus emphasized that refugee inclusion should bring tangible improvements in services, infrastructure and economic opportunities for both refugees and host communities.

The key question now is: How will these commitments translate into real improvements for communities in Kakuma and Kalobeyei?
