Billy Chelilde, a visual artist based in Cherangani Hills, discovered his passion for art at the age of 7. He has featured in major exhibitions, including The National Museums of Kenya, alongside prominent East African artists. This, he says, has been a validating milestone in his career.
While music played a significant role in his upbringing , given that his parents were musicians, it was his fascination with illustration that led him to pursue a career in visual arts. Over the years, his practice has evolved from pencil drawings to ball pen, acrylic paint, and now experimenting with sculpting. However, the theme behind his work has remained consistent: Pride as an African people. This is evident in his projects like the Icon series and Shine Your Crown series. He explains that the Icon series is about celebrating individuals in the Black and African community who have historically inspired him through their struggles and achievements.
Billy attributes his creative drive to the curiosity that started in his childhood, and he says it’s that same curiosity that keeps him going. Music remains a significant part of his creation process, providing inspiration during his work.
Looking to the future, Billy is excited about the possibility of a solo exhibition and hopes to join an art residency.
His advice to young creatives is simple: “Follow your light, it’ll never lead you astray.” He also emphasizes the importance of putting in the work, noting that while artists can live off their art, it doesn’t happen overnight.
