RIP Rafael Ithier. His success helped bring about the success of two of my tios in the salsa music world. He formed the El Gran Combo in 1962, in which one tio would later join in the early 80s as a trumpetista. In 1977 Ithier worked as a music arranger on the debut album for the Puerto Rican ensemble band "Puerto Rico All Stars" in which my other tio also played trumpet.

His contributions in Latin music were great, helping produce 60 albums and win two Grammy Awards for the El Gran Combo.

Nothing really puts a timestamp on your age and makes you self-realize how old you are, until you see how old the things you grew up enjoying are. Possibly the best album I've ever heard, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, is now 30 years old! Hard to say, but I listened to it from front to back, potentially more than any other album I've heard. Not a skip on it. D made music cool and smooth again.

PS. In other news, my Nintendo is 38 years old, a homeowner, and now has great, great, great, great-grandchildren.

A tear rolling down my face, a big RIP to Roy Ayers, the godfather of neo soul. I listen to him and his band Ubiquity essentially on a daily basis. He was the best vibraphonist I ever heard and a powerhouse in both soul and jazz music, synonymous with the word fusion.

Rest in peace to Quincy Jones. He had one of the finest music production companies (and production team) ever assembled. They put out unforgettable hits that the world will never forget.

As a producer, he made the best-selling album of all time, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” He was also a prolific arranger and composer of film music.

RIP to Sergio Santos Mendes. I’m so glad to have seen him perform live at the 2011 Tokyo Jazz Festival. My favorite albums of his are the one with Brasil ’66 and the two with Will.i.am. So many jazz, bossa, and samba classics.
