Furutani Pottery — Made for Everyday Life

We traveled to Shigaraki, Shiga—one of Japan's historic pottery towns—to visit Furutani Pottery.

Founded in 1970, Furutani Pottery creates warm, handcrafted tableware designed to become a natural part of everyday life.

Their signature soft white finish begins with iron-rich red clay, covered with white slip and carefully fired to create a warm, gentle expression.

Simple, beautiful, and made to complement the food served on it.

Every piece is shaped through careful handwork, with subtle differences that make each one unique.

In Shigaraki, we experienced not only the finished tableware, but also the place, people, and craftsmanship behind it.

古谷製陶所 — 暮らしに寄り添う器。

日本を代表する焼き物の産地のひとつ、滋賀県甲賀市・信楽へ。

今回訪れたのは、1970年創業の古谷製陶所です。

鉄分を多く含む赤土に白泥を掛け、丁寧に焼き上げることで生まれる、素朴で温かみのある粉引の「白」。

料理を盛り付けることで、その表情はさらに豊かに。

古谷製陶所では「暮らしに寄り添う」をテーマに、毎日の食卓で自然と手に取りたくなる器を、一つひとつ丁寧につくり続けています。

完成した器だけではなく、
その器が生まれる場所、人、そして手仕事に触れる。

信楽だからこそ出会える、ものづくりの風景がありました。

For over 450 years, the craft of Yamanaka lacquerware has been passed down in Ishikawa, Japan.

Kanesada Seito — Pad Printing

A pattern is transferred twice before it reaches the porcelain.

First, the design is transferred onto a silicone pad.
Then, the flexible pad presses the pattern onto the surface of each piece.

Known as pad printing, this indirect printing technique began spreading in Japan's ceramics industry in the 1980s.

It allows detailed patterns to be applied precisely and consistently—even to curved surfaces.

At Kanesada Seito, techniques like this support the production of tableware made for everyday life.

そこから器の素地へと再び転写する「パッド印刷」。

ヨーロッパで生まれた印刷技術を応用し、日本では1980年代から陶磁器の絵付けにも普及していきました。

柔軟なシリコンを使うことで、器の内側など曲面にも絵柄を美しく転写することができます。
