Night Taupoシリーズはニュージーランドの南島の真ん中にあるタウポ湖へ旅行をした後に描いたものだ。ニュージーランドは虹の国と呼ばれるほど通り雨が多い国だ。僕が現地に行った時も毎日雨が降り、また時折晴れて大きな虹が架かっていた。そんな国のタウポ湖に夜のドライブに出かけた。タウポ湖は琵琶湖とほぼ同じ大きさで、優しい海のようだった。パラパラと雨が降ったかと思えば、雲の切れ間からは星空が見るような、静かな良い夜だった。そんな情景を絵に描いた。水面に映りながら波に揺らめく雲や星空を一枚の絵に表現しようとしている。
-About this work-
"Night Taupo" series is painted after the trip to Lake Taupo in the middle of the South Island of New Zealand. New Zealand seems to be known as the rainbow country. When I was there, it rained every day, and sometimes it cleared up and there was a big rainbow.
I went for a night drive to Lake Taupo one day. Lake Taupo is about the same size as Lake Biwa and is like a gentle sea. It was a nice, quiet night, with a few flurries of rain and a starry sky peeking through the clouds. I painted such a scene in this painting. I am trying to express the clouds and starry sky shimmering in the waves and reflecting on the surface of the water in a single picture.
