SAVE THIS if you’re going to Japan after November 1, 2026 🇯🇵
Word on the street has been circulating around now…and the time is approaching real quick now!
Tax-free shopping in Japan is changing, and a lot of the shopping videos you’ve saved are about to be outdated.
RIGHT NOW, through October 31, 2026:
At participating tax-free stores, eligible tourists can show their passport and buy qualifying items without paying Japan’s consumption tax at checkout.
Basically:
🛍️ Shop
📱 Show your passport
💴 Pay the tax-free price
✅ Done
⭐️ STARTING NOVEMBER 1, 2026:
You’ll pay the full tax-included price when you shop.
👇 Then before leaving Japan:
🛍️ Keep your qualifying purchases available
🛂 Complete the tax-free procedure before checking your luggage
📱 Scan your passport at the airport or seaport tax-free terminal, or use Visit Japan Web where available
🔍 Customs may ask to physically inspect your purchases
💴 Once everything is confirmed, you receive the amount equivalent to the consumption tax back
And THIS is the part 2027 travelers really need to know:
If your tax-free purchases are already inside your checked suitcase, that could create a problem because customs may need to inspect them before your bag is checked.
A few more things to know:
📌 Purchases generally need to total at least ¥5,000 before tax at the same tax-free shop on the same day
📌 You need to take the items out of Japan within 90 days
📌 Food, drinks and cosmetics will no longer need the special sealed packaging, but using or consuming them in Japan can affect eligibility
📌 Customs can request to inspect your purchases before you leave
So if you’re planning Japan for late 2026 or 2027, don’t rely on an old video showing someone flashing a passport at Don Quijote and immediately paying the tax-free price.
That process changes November 1, 2026.
