Don Magazine — Open Call for Submissions

Issue 14 Theme: Intersections
Submission Deadline: May 31, 2026

Paths meet and diverge. Sometimes they cross in a fleeting moment; sometimes they run parallel for years before slipping apart. Intersections are where movement, memory, and meaning collide - those junctures that shape how we see ourselves and the wider world.

We’re seeking written and visual works that chronicle these intersections. Send us your stories, poems, essays, and visual works that move through these crossings — where the personal and political blur and sharpen, and something unexpected emerges in the in-between.

We invite writers, artists, and creatives to submit original work exploring the theme Intersections. For full details and submission guidelines, visit our website. www.donmag.org

For our final selection of our review, Mike .or.michael selected Don Magazine Issue 12 Mask

Issue 12, Mask, represents the culmination of my experience as Editor-in-Chief of Don Magazine. The scope and complexity of this issue required extensive planning and coordination, and it ultimately came together in a way that exceeded our expectations.
For the first time, we included paid advertisements, marking an important step in the magazine’s development. We also established a distribution agreement with Swissôtel, allowing the magazine to be shared with guests staying at the hotel, significantly expanding our audience.

Editorially, the issue featured an in-depth interview, by editor Idebayashi Tommy , with Yoshikazu Inoue , an artist known for creating masks from cardboard. Photographer Jono Hacon .photography collaborated with Inoue to produce an editorial photoshoot centered on the masks, extending the theme visually and materially throughout the magazine. The layout and design elements were handled brilliantly by Mariam , whose work unified the issue visually.

The release event, planned and produced by Yana , further activated the issue. Inoue led a hands-on mask-making workshop for children, and the event also featured a kamishibai performance by Okyan .omachiko Yana and I had met Okyan at an artist event in Osaka and felt her work would pair naturally with the children’s mask workshop. Together, these elements transformed the publication into a participatory, multi-generational experience.

This issue felt less like managing a project and more like directing a highly capable group of collaborators. I placed trust in the team, and they delivered well beyond my expectations, making Mask a defining moment in the evolution of Don Magazine.

Thank you for following along as we revisited some of our most memorable Don Magazine pieces. We hope you enjoyed them as much as we did. None of this would be possible without your continued support, and we are grateful to have such a dedicated audience.

For his second selection, Mike selected a piece from 2024.

Don Magazine Issue 08 Wear and Tear - Momoe by Matsu

Momoe is a documentary film directed by Matsu that we previewed at the Don Magazine Issue 08 release party in Fall 2024. The film follows Momoe , a singer who has devoted her life to preserving Shōwa-era music, culture, and relics.

I first met Matsu at the year prior, where he later contributed a short video for Don Magazine Issue 06, Reflection. As we began exploring ways to incorporate video into our events, his work felt like a natural progression. Screening Momoe alongside Momoe’s live performance significantly elevated the experience of the release party. People came specifically to see her perform and to watch Matsu’s film, and the pairing clarified what our events could become—spaces where print, film, and live performance intersect.

This moment marked an important expansion in how we understood Don Magazine as not only a publication, but a platform for live cultural exchange. The event would not have been possible without the support of Swissôtel .osaka The larger venue allowed us to accommodate a growing audience and played a critical role in expanding our reach.

Lastly, we turn to co-founder Mike .or.michael to share his memorable Don pieces.

Don Magazine Issue 03 Scales - Interview with Adrienne Hruby

One of my favorite pieces in Don Magazine is our first-ever artist interview, featured in Issue 03, Scales. This interview marked a significant turning point in the magazine’s development. It was the first time I clearly understood what the magazine could become and who it was truly for.

I had met Adrienne Hruby only once before, at an artist event, but when Yana and I began planning the theme for the issue, I knew I wanted to highlight her work. At the time, I had no experience conducting interviews and little confidence reaching out to artists, and the magazine was still read primarily by friends. Despite this, Adrienne responded generously and invited me to visit her studio, giving me everything I needed to make the piece work.

The interview layout was completed with the help of guest editor Hikaru. Issue 03—and this interview in particular—represents a major leap for Don Magazine, solidifying its role as a platform for showcasing emerging artists. This is the issue I consistently return to as the moment when Don truly found its footing.

Don Magazine Issue 11 Red - Strings by Francis Sevillo

Strings was another really strong collection of photographs. They had a lovely sensuality to them and I loved the strength and simplicity of them being entirely in black and red. They fit beautifully in multiple places throughout the issue which I felt gave a wonderful sense of cohesion and oneness to the issue.

Don Magazine Issue 12 Mask - photos by Michael Troy Judd

Michael’s selection of photos submitted for mask really stood out to out to me as a strong, cohesive body of work. Each photo stood well on its own but together they took me into a really interesting world I wanted to explore more of.

Don Magazine Issue 11 Red - Esfera Cubica by Danilo Garrido

The photos in this series felt like taking peek into a different magical world. I was fascinated by the characters and objects in the photos and wanted to get to know them and their significance.

For Yana’s final selection she chose the 2025 spring event.

Don Magazine Issue 10 Baka - Runako Hosting and French Antonio Performing

Issue 10, Baka, was the most difficult issue of Don Magazine to produce. Although the submissions were strong, the central challenge was sequencing and cohesion—bringing individual works together into a unified narrative. That cohesion was unusually hard to achieve, and both Mike and I were exhausted. The issue did not come together as intuitively as previous ones, and by the time it went to print, our enthusiasm had noticeably waned. For the first time, the promise we made to continue only while the process remained enjoyable felt genuinely tested.

The release event, however, changed everything. I took the lead in organizing the party, securing a host, Runako , and a performance by French Antonio .music . Mike arrived uncertain about continuing the magazine at all, but by the end of the night the issue had sold out, and the energy in the room was undeniable. The event reframed the work and reminded us of the community we were building.

In the days that followed, Mike and I acknowledged that the magazine had grown beyond what we could sustain on our own. After seeking guidance from the editors at Kyoto Journal and speaking with friends who wanted to become more involved, we officially welcomed Mariam and Tommy to the team. Baka ultimately taught us that Don Magazine could no longer exist in isolation, and that growth required trust, collaboration, and a collective effort.
