Go Forth /

When I visited Spain in June, I saw Antoni Tàpies’ Ambrosia by chance at the Guggenheim in Bilbao and was gobsmacked. He has long been one of my favorite artists, especially for his ability to connect seeming coincidence with form. Is it chance? Is it skill? Did he even know?

This painting is dedicated to him. And yes, I am deliberately trying to let this one look like his work, albeit with my own secret sauce. It takes courage to pursue your own path while also acknowledging the broad shoulders that helped clear it for you.

The cross appears often in Tàpies’ work and is naturally rife with symbolism. I offer a less religious, though no less burdensome, take. For me, the cross embodies the four directions of our lives: the physical, the spiritual, the intellectual, and the emotional. To deny one is to distort the whole.

That is where Go Forth enters. Take up your cross as you see it, for it will not be the same as mine, and have the courage to move ahead. It is not an optimistic slogan. It is simply what we must do so that when we look back on that road, we can say it was a life well lived.

And thank you — thank you — to those who came before. We’ll see you soon enough, I suppose. But not today.

JAQK of All Trades

もともとの言い回しは “Jack of all trades, master of none.”

The phrase “Jack of all trades” usually carries an implied criticism. I have never seen it that way. The world encourages us to become one thing; I’ve always been more interested in becoming many.

For me, art in particular has brought with it a great deal of humility. It has shown me that willingness, intelligence, and confidence do not guarantee mastery, and that the work will usually expose whatever certainty I bring to it.

Cards have suits. So do people. Artist is one of mine.

A suit can represent profession, status, identity, or simply the role we choose—or are expected—to play. Here, those suits surround the heart—but do they define it? Or does it work both ways? The question becomes whether love can endure the pressures of the suits, even with the Queen of Hearts ever the largest, looming suit of all… whatever it is she stands for.

The crowns and the solitary S? Well, those are there for people who already know why. If you don’t know, I ain’t telling you.

JAQK of All Trades is ultimately about identity. We spend our lives changing suits, learning new roles, and taking on new challenges. The suits of the world may surround the heart, but they should never replace it.

Somehow It Works

I first tried making something on this canvas more than three years ago. It didn’t work—kind of like a lot of things in my life at the time.

Sometimes, when I look back at the things I’ve made over the years, I wonder whether “what works” is about the thing itself, or really about the perspective I had on it then. I don’t have an answer for that. No one does.

What I do know now is that sometimes you have to make what you have work.

So I did. I took the old canvas, tore into what was on the surface, and made holes in it along the way. I glued an old T-shirt to the back to cover them, then kept painting, working, and going.

And then I broke out laughing.

It was done.

That is probably the most honest explanation of how I paint: I keep working, changing, covering, exposing, painting, scraping, tearing, repairing, and being utterly relentless until, somehow, it works.

Entitled: Elsewhere Was Here

Elsewhere is not permanent. A place can be foreign, then familiar, then distant again. And it can be neither of these, too.

Flowers bring hope of the new. Flowers are the good memories you retain despite what life throws at you. They are the temporal gift of life itself, a reminder of cycles. It wouldn’t be a work of mine without the reminder that beauty can spring from anywhere - even amidst grit and chaos.

Just remember that every place is elsewhere at some point; that is, unless you don’t venture onwards.

This painting was finished in Okinawa the day before leaving for Spain.

Entitled: Good Luck

Good luck is never the whole story. Sevens appear across the canvas both inside and outside the diamond — the familiar shorthand of gambling luck, repeated until symbol becomes structure. The work is blunt: a diamond, a lucky number, an iconic card suit pushed straight in your face.

But the surface texture argues with the promise. It is layered, scraped, sanded, marked, and rebuilt. Luck may give you the card, but it does not play the hand.

Good luck gets you the moment.

The rest is having the nerve to stay in the game.

Title: 黒板 Chalkboard
Life isn’t written once. It’s written, erased—sometimes fully, sometimes partially—and written again.
That’s a chalkboard. You put something down for the world to see and judge. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes you don’t even like it yourself. So you wipe it away—completely, or just enough to try again—leaving traces of what was there before. Sometimes you erase what worked. Sometimes you get close, but not close enough. So you keep going.
Over time, the surface carries all of it: the attempts, the corrections, the missteps, and the parts that finally hold.
This painting follows that same process. The lines are thinking made visible—drawn, adjusted, reinforced, or abandoned. Some stay. Some fade. None arrive perfectly. The texture, the wear, the structure—it’s all built through repetition, trial and error, and the willingness to start over.
“Chalkboard” is about that cycle. Picking yourself up, taking what you’ve learned, and moving forward—even when it’s messy, even when it takes more tries than you expected.
What you see in the end isn’t clean, because life isn’t clean.
What remains isn’t perfect - but it’s earned. Something that works because you stayed with it long enough to make it work.
And even then, it’s never final. There’s always more to learn.

“Signal” reads like a traffic light laid on its side — two orbs present, the third conspicuously absent. There is no go here. That signal has to come from within. In the horizontal oblong presentation of the piece, yellow lines trace the eye’s natural trajectory across the canvas, upper left to lower right, while black lines define where the eye stops.

There is no green light. There never was. That one’s yours.

“Frame of Reference” is a 61cm × 122cm original work by Jason Hatchell, created with spray paint, acrylic, and rusted canvas L-brackets on canvas.

There is no universal luck. There is only the angle from which you’re looking.

The rusted canvas L-brackets screwed directly into the canvas are the title made physical. A frame defines a point of view. These brackets mark edges where edges refuse to contain anything.

At the center: the suit of clubs, but only partially rendered in its natural black. The rest bleeds white, incomplete, mid-transformation — as if luck itself were still in the process of being decided. It shares the canvas with a vertical black form pressing against it, tension held without resolution.

Hidden throughout: 8s and 13s stamped into it, but never coming together. Eight, broadly lucky. Thirteen, personally lucky. Together they sum to 21 — but only if you’re counting, and only if you know what to look for.

Luck isn’t distributed. It’s recognized — and recognition is entirely a matter of where you’re standing. And once you think you’ve figured out all those angles, remember - there’s also the POV of the person who made it...

Your frame of reference is the hand you’re playing.
