ご回答ありがとうございました!
Here is the fourth installment of questions from our audience—
answers from the singers performed in Carmen (Part 2)!
Thank you!
Question 13
Please tell us how you take care of your throats.
Answer 13
"Hydration!" — Yurie Takano
"Drinking plenty of water!" — Momoko Nash*tani
Question 14
Can opera singers score a perfect 100 in karaoke?
Answer 14
"We can get high scores, but getting a perfect 100 is actually quite difficult!" — Kenji Mizuguchi
Since karaoke machines score based on their own specific criteria—such as requiring a steady tempo or volume—the scoring sometimes differs from what makes a vocal performance pleasant for a human listener.
Question 15
Is there anything specific you focus on to ensure your performance effectively reaches the audience?
Answer 15
"Before stepping onto the stage, I make an effort to maintain the breathing pattern of the character I am playing." — Kimika Yamagiwa
"Conveying words clearly, refining my vocal technique, and truly living the role." — Takayuki Ito
"I focus on avoiding forced acting; instead, I aim for natural movement and express the nuances of emotion through the singing itself." — Takato Yuasa
Question 16
How much do you study the pronunciation of the language when singing opera? Can you sing in a language even if you don't speak it?
Answer 16
"For this production of Carmen, I mastered the pronunciation of French language thanks to the patient, repeated guidance of Pascal Oba, the language coach.
Since composers write music to match the natural intonation of the language, it is certainly better if you can speak it, but you can still sing it if you study it thoroughly. I recommend taking the time to master it." — Akiko Tomihira
