Kyoto again for a short trip 🍂 Learning about kan'ei culture and its beautiful art and crafts filling this city.

Even though my main interest is always contemporary creation I’m eager to learn more about the art history of Japan.
Having graduated in art history in France before focusing on contemporary helped me so much understand the importance and depts of works and their artists. This education being primarily European-centered I’m so happy and lucky to be able to fill the gaps I have and get more knowledge about the art history here.

KYOTO DIARIES 🍂 漆 (うるし/ Urushi)

🌳The smell of wood, tiny cracks under our feet, eyes wondering everywhere, the feeling of curiosity takes over when entering Ryuji's studio.

Trained as a urushi artisan, Ryuji is also a visual artist.
🚪He kindly opened the door to his world, explaining his tools, often surprising and unexpected!

He uses his training to produce artworks deeply inspired by this craft.

Japanese lacquer has a deep connection with nature.
The mixture in the first picture is gathered from trees.
A slow and meticulous process which lasts until the tree goes back to the earth ending the loop.
These trees could not survive in the wild without the trained artisan to care for them.
Continusouly caring for the area and providing the tree what it needs.

Ryuji coproduced a mesmerizing video piece, between art and documentary peeking at the relationship between the trees and the craftsmen.
Will soon be on view in Tokyo!

Thank you for this moment (In French!!👏)

About the blog

👋 ʜᴇʟʟᴏ ᴛʜᴇʀᴇ, ᴡᴇʟᴄᴏᴍᴇ ᴛᴏ ᴍʏ ᴀʀᴛ ʙᴜᴄᴋᴇᴛ ʟɪsᴛ!

My name is Agathe 🙋‍♀️, I am French and live in Paris, there I work in the contemporary art world as a freelance. Every time I get the chance I travel, I go to museums, art centers, galleries, and all the cool places I can find. When researching travel guides I realised I could not find information on these specific places, so I decided to do my own research and publish what I found online, so it can help others as well.

❓ᴡʜᴀᴛ ᴡɪʟʟ ʏᴏᴜ ғɪɴᴅ ᴏɴ ᴛʜɪs ʙʟᴏɢ?

📍ᴄɪᴛʏ-ɢᴜɪᴅᴇs Info on art places, food and cute shops, cool artsy stuff to do, basically what not to miss out on your next cultural travel. For now I have some posts about France (duh), England, Japan, Lebanon, USA, Canada, and so many more!
