👏 The ASA applauds the Prime Minister’s strong commitment to Australian creators, made today in a speech about shaping artificial intelligence in Australia’s interests.

The Prime Minister said, "Australian writers, musicians, artists and journalists must retain ownership and control of their work. Our laws will spell that out, plain as day. An artist’s creative endeavour is their work and their property. No company should use Australian books, music, art or news to build or train AI without the artist’s control. That includes the artist’s control of the price and value of their work. Anything less, is theft."

ASA Chair said, “It’s fantastic to have confirmation that the government will stand by Australian creators. This has been a very stressful time for authors, with so much pressure being applied by wealthy Big Tech lobbyists. I commend the government for sticking to its principles and seeing the value of Australian authors and Australian stories. Our rights as creators must be defended.

“Now big tech needs to come to the table and accept the facts. The next step is to make sure that authors are fairly compensated for the past theft of our work and for its future use, and that our rights are respected in practice.”

ASA CEO Lucy Hayward said, “The government has been consistent on copyright and the expectation has been made clear: AI developers must respect creators’ rights. And yet, instead of commencing negotiations with creators and rightsholders, multinational AI companies have continued to lobby in Canberra for changes to our law, using data centre investment as leverage. The reluctance of AI companies to work with the creative industries on licensing solutions is slowing us down and hampering the government’s efforts to plan for our future.

“We are thrilled about this important acknowledgement from government that Australian stories are the bedrock of our culture, and copyright enables those stories to continue being told."

I’ve been a busy bee 🐝 in my studio these past weeks creating a piece which combines things I love: bees (this is an Australian native blue banded bee), sunflowers (enough said) and black cockatoos (such gorgeous cheekycharacters!) using lots of colour!!

Life has been a bit challenging of late but creating has always given me an outlet to express emotion. It’s so freeing when it all comes loose. This is part of a piece I am working on which draws a few elements together. This is not to say it will end up as I envisaged but it’s the germ of an idea which sparks it! Do other people feel like this when they start creative ideas I wonder! Like you have an idea but as it forms it can still become something else? 🤔

I enjoyed visiting the Terracotta Warriors Exhibition at the WA museum so much I went twice! I drew them on the first visit and was inspired to paint a couple of them on the Baohong watercolour block I was gifted from Baohong. I was awarded the Baohong Excellence Award at the Le Venezie International Watercolour Festival for my piece ‘Colour and Drama in Venice’ last year. The festival is jointly sponsored by Italy and China so it seems only fitting. The finalists were exhibited in an incredible 12th Century Palazzo in the Veneto. It was so lovely to be in Italy and meet up with fellow artists from all over the world, I can’t believe I was there again. Just fantastic. Thanks to all the hardworking people who made it happen!

Always happy whenever someone likes one of my artworks enough to take it home to enjoy it! Another one coming soon (thanks again to Joe, Freo print legend! He’s printed my artwork on museum quality watercolour paper colour matched so well it’s hard to tell the difference between the original & the print!!). Pop into Freo’s National Hotel there are a few of my Fremantle artworks to enjoy! 🖼️ 🫶✨
