Happy Jazzfest from New Orleans
Every day is Mardi Gras but Jazzfest is best so say the regular visitors and residents!
It is so apparent that Jazzfest has gone mega worldwide with huge crowds and an unbelievable amount of major shows that you would see at the biggest festivals and the Sphere in Las Vegas, London, LA, New York, Coachella or Dubai.
Upon arrival we were treated to a phenomenal concert performed by Lukas Nelson, who is destined to become a superstar in the legacy of his father.
On the very first day of the festival we saw one of our favorites, Sierra Green, who performed with Devon Allman for us last year, Kenny Neal and the Neal Brothers Band, the finest pride of Baton Rouge, Stephen Marley, the second son of Bob Marley from Kingston Jamaica and the incredible “Raye" a seismic superstar, neo glamour diva, young, hot with a voice as strong like Adele‘s and 25 performers on stage, including a string section and a horn section with a chorus dressed in formal wear to complement her gorgeous green gown.
This is not your grandparents Jazzfest anymore! It was mega stars and the greatest living legacy performers of New Orleans all weekend, including Stevie Nicks, who drew a huge crowd and performed remarkably for a 77 year old vocal performer with a great LA band.
Everywhere you looked all weekend it was super diverse afro Caribbean/Cuban Cima Funk and New Orleans own mega stars, Irma Thomas, Cyril Neville and George Porter Jr, who will be arriving in late July to perform at the Jersey Shore.
George Porter Jr was on the cover of the magazines and the posters and declared to be “King George“ of Jazzfest Tony Marts is so proud to have him at our New Orleans Funk Tribute to The Meters and Dr John along with John Papa Gros performing on both the 22nd and 24 of July.
Pervasive amongst all of the keyboard players and thousands of fans, including the folks who enjoyed the piano night for the benefit of WWOZ at House of Blues, was produced for the 10th year by our good friend and pre-eminent keyboard player, Joe Krown, there was one consistent tribute.
Everyone agreed that Marcia Ball was to be honored as one of the greatest of all time singer song writers, performers and pianist so great that she is dedicated as the piano queen of two of America’s great music cities: Austin, Texas and New Orleans!
Although she was not performing, Marcia was there in physical presence and the love for her was Overwhelming in the sincerest way!
This weekend the festival presents the number one pop music, recording artist of all times, the Eagles with Joe Walsh and so many great ones including Widespread Panic, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Earth, Wind and Fire, Herbie Hancock, Little Feat and Trombone Shorty. As we like to say, you could produce the best music festival in the world with the bands that you are not able to see at Jazzfest! Think about it!
Back in Somers Point we are honored to announce a special summer kickoff party in honor of our long-standing public works director, Guy Martin, who worked for the city 52 years and took care of the Beach Concerts for Nick Regine and for the Somers Point Beach Concert committee for all 33 years even after Nick's îretirement.
This is going to be a very special night with many of our greatest musical performers in a free concert dedicated to Guy Martin and his family and the Good Times in the Old Point!
More information will be coming forward, but the show will start at 6pm and the doors will open at 5:30 and everyone is welcome, especially our many sponsors who will celebrate the season with us June 12 when the Legacy Concerts on the Beach begin.
Everyone should mark Thursday May 14 on their calendar as we are going all out again for one of our own with an amazing free concert starring Billy Walton, Danny Eyer, Tony Teschner Rich “Megahurtz” Kurtz and many more of the Tony Mart Allstars celebrating the career and contributions of a truly great Somers Point citizen, Guy Martin, and the summer yet to come!
Looking forward to seeing you all at Josie Kelly’s that night at 5:30 and until then, “Let the Good Times Roll!
