Three different cities depending on the week you book!

Until 23 December you get the full run, eight squares, every market lit.

From 24 to 26 December the list shrinks to three: Rathausplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Stephansplatz, with shortened hours on Christmas Eve.

From 27 December the old town is largely done and the action moves out to Prater and Schoenbrunn, both running to 6 January.

None of this is a problem if you know it before you book the flight. ✈

Vienna held a Krippenmarkt in 1298, under a right Albrecht I had granted the city two years before, and the point of it was not festive.

It was a chance to stock up before the winter closed in. Dresden's Striezelmarkt, the one usually called the first proper Christmas market, turns up more than a century later. Seven hundred years on, the city still runs the thing it invented, and every square it runs on has its own reason for existing.
