We recently shared an interview with composer Alexey Retinsky. Today, we’d like to introduce his contribution to The Tree Rooted in the Sky.

Retinsky’s music forms one of the branches of the project’s musical composition. He wrote a piece for the folk ensemble Toloka, bringing his own compositional language into conversation with quotations from folk music.

Retinsky works across chamber, symphonic, choral and electroacoustic music, and also composes for theatre and film. In the pavilion’s project his piece sits alongside works by other composers, together forming a many-voiced musical narrative.

Alexey Retinsky’s performance opens the full recording of the project, so you can listen from the very beginning.

The visual language of The Tree is Rooted in the Sky was shaped not only by the design of the space, but also by graphic design. Antonio Buonuario was one of the artists who contributed to the project. Working across graphic design, illustration, video, and spatial practices, he explores how images can take shape in different media.

For the project Antonio created visuals for the biennale catalogue and designed printed T-shirts that were available at the pavilion’s bargain bin. Both the catalogue and the T-shirts offer a way to take a piece of the project home. Once printed, the images can travel beyond the pavilion, finding their way into art collages, wardrobes or personal archives.

Read more about the bargain bin in one of our previous posts. Pages from the catalogue are also available to download via the link in our bio!

Atosigado y Hérrica is a collaborative project by Mexican musicians Óscar Landgrave Ortega and Julio Montañez Herrera, both from Hermosillo. Their practice brings together acoustic and electronic instruments, exploring the rhythms and sounds of Latin American club music.

Their music weaves together cumbia, tribal, guaracha, reggaeton, and Brazilian funk. These diverse genres form a dynamic soundscape in which traditional rhythmic patterns meet electronic textures and dance beats.

At the Pavilion, the duo presented a live set featuring synthesizers and percussion. Tune in at 02:51:00 in the full recording to hear Atosigado y Hérrica’s performance in its entirety.

As part of the pavilion’s musical programme, the Intrada vocal ensemble, led by Ekaterina Antonenko, performed works by Oleg Gudachev, Lucas Sukharev and Alexey Sysoev.

Intrada works with music from different periods, combining its experience in performing early music with an ongoing exploration of new approaches to sound. Founded in Moscow in 2006, the ensemble initially specialised in Renaissance and Baroque music. Working with early polyphonic repertoire has shaped the ensemble’s particular attention to the independence of each voice and to the way individual parts come together to form a unified sound.

Over time, Intrada expanded its practice to include music of the 20th and 21st centuries. The ensemble performs new works, takes part in Russian and world premieres, and works with compositions written specifically for vocal ensembles.

You can find their performances in the full video: Oleg Gudachev’s work begins at 02:04:48 and Alexey Sysoev’s at 07:11:45.

The Roots section features another interview with composer Alexey Retinsky, who shares ideas behind his work for the pavilion, reflects on working with folklore in contemporary music and considers the position of the audience within the space during a musical performance. The interview was recorded before the premiere, making it especially interesting to revisit as a document of the creative process.

Retinsky reflects on breath, timbre and soundscape — all of which directly shape the sonic qualities of sound — while revealing the principles behind the composition. His reflections show how personal observations, the interviewer’s questions, and emerging associations can come together to shape a musical idea. In the cards, we have highlighted several themes that allow you to trace this process.

A journey to his hometown became the starting point for Ilya Kapitonov’s electroacoustic piece. The author explores movement as a process in which physical travel intertwines with its inner experience. Resistance, shifts in direction and changes in speed become part of a journey that exists simultaneously in physical space and in memory.

The composition is built around field recordings made in Siberia and digital sounds. It began to take shape during the artist’s journey and continued to develop over the following year, with the original material gradually expanding through acousmatic layers and subtle timbral details. The twelve-minute piece invites the listener to attune to the very nature of movement and to sense how space changes when a journey passes through memory and personal experience. You can listen to the full piece in the Roots section of our website.

“With music gone, the musicians remain”, — writes Anna Ganzha in her text. The researcher considers music as a practice inseparable from the person making it and from their responsibility towards others. Anna reflects on the musician’s freedom, on how personal experiences can be transformed into sound and how sound can affect those around us.

The text is divided into seven sections, exploring voice and sound as mediums of the political, the ability of music to bear witness to what is happening, acoustic humility and sonorous repentance.

In the cards we have gathered the key ideas from each section. The full text is available in the Roots section of our website.

Phurpa is a musical project that emerged in Moscow in the mid-1990s out of an interest in traditional and ritual music. Its practice is rooted in the study of Bon rituals, distinctive throat-singing techniques, and the sound of traditional Tibetan instruments.

Bon is an ancient religious tradition of Tibet, in which rituals aimed at engaging with various spirits and forces of nature hold a special place. Within these rituals, sound and voice play a significant role, becoming integral participants in the ceremony. This ritual significance is reflected in Phurpa’s musical language, where vocal practices are among the central elements of its sound.

The group has also participated in various theatrical productions and international festivals. A recording of Phurpa’s performance as part of the pavilion’s programme can be viewed in the full video, starting at 04:33:41.
