Frederick Douglass’s story at Cedar Hill began long before he ever owned the house.

Born into slavery, Douglass escaped and went on to become one of America’s most influential abolitionists, writers, and public speakers. In 1877, he purchased a property in Anacostia, Washington, D.C., and expanded the house from roughly 14 rooms to 21.

He called it Cedar Hill.
